About Caroline Louisa Cavendish-Bentinck
- Burke, Bernard, Sir. A genealogical and heraldic history of the landed gentry of Great Britain & Ireland 6th ed. London : Harrison 1879. Vol I. page 229
Lady Charles Bentinck (1788 - 19 March 1875, born Anne Wellesley), known as Lady Abdy between 1806 and 1816, was an Anglo-Irish aristocrat and a great-great-grandmother of Queen Elizabeth II.
[edit] Background
Bentinck was a daughter of Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquess Wellesley, and his mistress Hyacinthe-Gabrielle Roland, an actress at the Palais Royal for many years. Her parents were married on 29 March, 1794, six years after her birth. She was legitimized at this point. Her paternal grandparents were Garret Wesley, 1st Earl of Mornington and Anne Hill. Anne was a daughter of Arthur Hill, 1st Viscount Dungannon. Her paternal uncles included William Wellesley-Pole, 3rd Earl of Mornington, Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington and Henry Wellesley, 1st Baron Cowley.
[edit] Marriages and children
On 3 July 1806, Anne married her first husband Sir William Abdy, 7th Baronet. Their marriage lasted nine years but remained childless. Abdy had introduced her to his friend Lord Charles Bentinck, a younger son of William Cavendish-Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Anne and Lord Charles became lovers at some point during her first marriage. They eloped on 5 September 1815. She was granted a divorce on 25 June 1816. Anne and Lord William were married on 23 July 1816. They had four children:
* Anne Cavendish Cavendish-Bentinck (1 September 1816–7 June 1888).
* Emily Cavendish Cavendish-Bentinck (d. 6 June 1850). Married Henry Hopwood.
* Reverend Charles William Frederick Cavendish-Bentinck (1817-11-08- 1865-08-17)
* Lt.-Gen. Arthur Cavendish-Bentinck (10 May 1819 - 11 December 1877). He married first Elizabeth Sophia Hawkins-Whitshed. They were parents of William Cavendish-Bentinck, 6th Duke of Portland. He married secondly Augusta Browne, 1st Baroness Bolsover.
The third child was father to Cecilia Nina Cavendish-Bentinck, grandfather to Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon and great-grandfather to Queen Elizabeth II.
(Caroline) Louisa Cavendish-Bentinck (née Caroline Louisa Burnaby) (1832 – 1918) was the second wife of the Reverend Charles Cavendish-Bentinck, and the grandmother of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother and great grandmother of Queen Elizabeth II.
She was the daughter of Edwyn Burnaby, of Baggrave Hall and Anne Caroline Salisbury.
She married Cavendish-Bentinck on 13 December 1859. Together they had three children:
(Nina) Cecilia Cavendish-Bentinck (1862-1938). Married Claude Bowes-Lyon, 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. They were parents to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother (1900-2002) and thus maternal grandparents to Queen Elizabeth II.
Ann Violet Cavendish-Bentinck (1864-1932).
Hyacinth Cavendish-Bentinck (1864-1916). Married Augustus Edward Jessop.
After the Rev Charles's death in 1865, she married, for a second time, Harry Warren Scott (ante 1855 - c. 1889), the son of Sir William Scott of Ancrum, 6th Baronet.[1]
