Notes

"The [Stafford of Eyam] family accumulated vast wealth, and the hundreds of acres they owned included the townships of Eyam, Foolow, and the hamlet of Bretton, besides which they were lords and sole owners of the manors of Calver and Rowland. When the last male descendant, Humphrey, died in 1560, he left a fortune of nearly £1,000,000 to be divided at the death of his wife, Ann, between their four daughters - Alice, Gertrude, Katherine and Ann. Alice married John Savage, of Castleton; Gertrude was married to Rowland Eyre, of Hassop; Katherine became the wife of Rowland Morewood, of Bradfield; and Ann married Francis Bradshaw, of Bradshaw Hall, Derbyshire."

Stafford, of Eyam; temp. Hen. III.— Eliz. The heiress of Roland married into this family in the reign of Henry VI. The coheiresses of Humphry Stafford, the last heir male, married Savage of Castleton, Eyre of Hassop, Morewood, and Bradshaw. The immediate descendants of these coheiresses quartered the arms of Stafford of Eyam the same as those of Stafford of Botham. We have seen a seal of Stafford of Eyam in the collection of Mr. Wolley, of Matlock, with the following arms: — Ermine, on a bend, Gules, three roundles. (fn. 3)

from Re: Edward I Unbroken Female Descent to Staffords of Eyam post by Brad Verity 2005

"The latter website (On the Bradshaws and Staffords of Eyam with a Notice of the Old Hall by Peter Furness, Esq. This article was published originally in The Reliquary, Vol. 2, 1861-2; pp219-226. This transcription by Paul Bradford © 2001) seems especially well-researched. It debunks the theory that Alice Stafford, purported wife of gateway ancestor Capt. Anthony Savage (d. 1695), of Virginia (and mother of his dau Dorothy Savage, wife of William Strother), was dau of Humphrey Stafford of Eyam and Lucy Eyre of Holm Hall."
"I was excited thinking for a moment that Virginia-born Dorothy Savage was a direct female-line descendant of Edward I, but it just ain't the case."
