About Abigail Busby

Susannah Freeman married John Compton, a laborer & clothier, by about 1632 in England (assuming she was the mother of his only known child). They came to Massachusetts Bay in 1634. They first settled in Roxbury; moved to Boston by 1637. (On 25 February 1642/3, "Susan the wife of our brother John Compton" was admitted to Boston church.) She died by 12 November 1664, when her will was proved.

Their only proven child: Abigail (Campton) Brisco Busby.

In her undated will, proved 12 November 1664, Susannah Compton, "widow of the long since departed John Compton," bequeathed her entire estate to "my little grandchild, Joseph Brisco." In the settlement of the estate it was decided that Abraham Busby would receive half for bringing up Joseph Brisco, and the other half to be paid to Joseph at age twenty-one.

The inventory of the estate of Susannah Compton, taken 12 November 1664, totalled £16 16s., none of which was real estate.

John Compton had a daughter Abigail Compton who married 1st Joseph Brisco on 30 Jan 1652 in Boston (and had a son Joseph Briscoe, Jr. born 21 Aug 1658), and 2nd Abraham Busby on 4 Jul 1659 in Boston. I believe this Abigail Compton is the same as an Abigail Compton, daughter of John, who was baptized in Cranbrook, England on 7 Apr 1633.

In the will of Susannah Compton in November 1664, she mentions she is a widow of John Compton, long since departed, and wills her estate to her grandson Joseph Brisco (Jr.).

In my opinion John Compton's father was Thomas Compton, the vicar of the Sutton Valence parish in Kent, England. I have a baptism record for John Compton in Sutton Valence on 22 Jul 1599, baptized by his father Thomas Compton. In Thomas Compton's will of 1606 he mentions his youngest son John Compton. Sutton Valence is only 8-9 miles northeast of Cranbook.
