=HISTORY OF THE SCARBOROUGH FAMILY=
According to legend and early records, the Skarthi family left what is now Norway in 874 A.D. to sail to Iceland. They were reputed to have been the first permanent settlers of this island. A part of the family left Iceland in 965 A.D. to settle in what is now Scarborough, England. The family lived in a castle called Scarburgh built on a rocky cliff. ("Scar" meaning rocky and" burgh", cliff). A few people of this name live around Scarborough today. Our branch, as far as can be traced, left the coastal area of Scarborough and settled around London.

The first known member of our line was Isaac, who was born about 1560 and is buried in the Bunhills Fields Cemetery, London. (It is possible that the father of Isaac was John, but this is not proved.)
Isaac had at least one son, William, who was born about 1598 and died on 28 December, 1680. He lived in Hosier Lane and was a member of the Peel Monthly Meeting of the Friends (Quaker) religion. William is buried in Checker Alley of the Bunhill Field Cemetery.
John, the son of William, was born in 1620 and married Anne
?. John was a blacksmith and a coachman. He was also a member of the Peel Monthly Meeting. He had at least one son, John who was born in 1646.
The first of our line to come to America was John Sr. who was born in 1646, a son of John and Anne
?. John Sr., was born in London and married Sarah Ashby (a daughter of William Ashby) on 22 February, 1663. John Sr., was also a member of the Peel Monthly Meeting. John Sr. purchased 250 acres on 4 July, 1682 from William Penn, to be laid out in Pennsylvania. John, but not Sarah, was of the Quaker religion and during this period of turmoil, John Sr., and his oldest son John sailed to Pennsylvania in 1682 on the "Welcome", a vessel owned by William Penn, and the 19th ship to touch the shores of the new World. (The" Welcome" seems to have been a popular vessel and our ancestors may well have been on another ship.)
Upon arrival, John Sr., who was a blacksmith, a whitesmith and a coachsmith, built a rude shelter in the woods of what is now Bucks Co., Pennsylvania and lived there for two years. At this time he departed for England leaving his son with Quaker friends. His intent was to return to America, but his wife Sarah refused to leave England. In 1696, John Sr., gave his son John a power of attorney for the land in America. He died in England 21 May, 1706. His will, which was made out in 1696 was witnessed by William Penn.
Children of John Sr., and Sarah Ashby Scarborough whose birth records are found in Holborn Parish, St. Sepulchre Church:
(1)John was born in 1667 in England and married in 1690 to Mary (Pierson) Farr. He died 27 January, 1727, in Bucks Co., Pennsylvania.
(2) Anne was born in 1664 and died 27 September, 1666.
(3) William ws born in 1670, and married Elizabeth---?
(4) Susannah was born in 1672 and died 10 August, 1673.
(5) Sarah was born on 3 June, 1674 and died 15 June 1674.
(6) Elizabeth was born in 1675.
(7) Baldwin was born 5 March, 1679 and died 19 March, 1679.
(8) Richard was born in 1680 and died 29 August, 1680.
John (1667) our first American ancestor, being unhappy with the family or conditions under which he was left by his father, ran away to live with the Indians. He became fluent in the native languages and years later, after returning to the settlements, often acted as interpreter between the white settlers and the Indians. It is reported that he once prevented a war between the Indians and the settlers. John married Mary (Pierson) Farr in 1690. She was the daughter of Robert and Mary Janney Pierson (who were also Quakers and born in England) and the widow of John Farr of Hunterdon Co. New Jersey. Many researchers have thought she was Indian.) A will for Sarah Farr, widow of Elias Farr dated 5 August, 1698 in Burlington, New Jersey (page 159, Vol. 23 New Jersey Archives) mentions her daughter Mary Scarborough. (Many researchers say that after John's death Mary married Phillip Torrey, however the date of this marriage, 1647, is prior to the birth of Mary Pierson.) She died on 23 January, 1751 at about age 85.
John bought land in New Castle Co. Delaware in 1691 from William Paxton, Jr. and sold this land in 1711 to Harry Paxton. (William had a fight with John in 1701 and was dismissed from the Quaker church as a result).
John settled around Solesbury, Pennsylvania after leaving Middletown. He was prominent in the Quaker church. He died in Solesbury on 27 January, 1727.
Children of John and Mary:
(1) William born 30 October, 1691, Bucks Co. Pennsylvania and married Alice Longshore in 1712. He died September, 1727 in Middletowm, Pennsylvania. He was a turner by trade.
(2) Sarah was born 4 February, 1694 in Bucks CO., Pennsylvania and married George Haworth. This is the line from which President Herbert Hoover descends. After George died, she married Matthew Hall. Sarah died 4 March, 1748.
(3) Mary was born 8 August, 1695 and married Samuel Pickering in October 1712. After Samuel died she married Joseph Lupton and had issue. She died 25 May, 1760.
(4) Susannah was born 29 May, 1697 and married Richard Brock in 1718. She died in 1726. They had four (4) children.
(5) Elizabeth was born in 1699 and married John Fisher on 29 October, 1719. She died 20 January, 1742. They had ten (10) children.
(6) John was born in 1703 and married Jane Margeerum in 1731. They had no issue.
(7) Hannah was born 31 August, 1704 and married Benjamin Fell on 27 June, 1748. She died 21 February, 1743.
(8) Robert, our ancestor, was born 10 June, 1708 and married first, Elizabeth Fisher, sister of John Fisher, above. When Robert and Elizabeth and their family moved to Frederick Co., Virginia in 1737, they were accompanied by their nephews, Stephanus, Absolom, and James Haworth. Robert was a widower by 1747 and married Mary Bailey, daughter of William Bailey, about 1750. He died on 19 January, 1805, probably in Greenbrier Co., Virginia at the age of 97 years.
Robert (1708) our ancestor inherited a farm of 127 acres from his father in Solebury where he lived until 1737 at which time he believed the country was becoming too crowded. He sold the farm and took his young family to Frederick Co., Virginia. He next moved to Bedford Co. by 1762 and finally he settled in the SHenandoah Valley in Virginia to live. in what later became Greenbrier Co. and still later, Monroe Co, West Virginia. Two children, John and Elizabeth were born in Pennsylvania. After Robert and Elizabeth arrived in Virginia, they transferred their certificates to the Quaker Church in Winchester, Virginia. Robert was' mentioned several times in Church records and his final location in Monroe Co., is pinpointed by these. He was apparently a friend to the Indians and was frequently asked by the military for aid during troubled times.
In 1762, the court ordered the Church Wardens in Russell Parish in Bedford Co. to "bind out Rachel, William, James, Kiziah and Isaac, children of Rob Scarbrough". According to law, this could be done when parents were too poor to care for their children. In 1768, William Bailey gave a gift of love to his grandson William (1753), and in a separate action, he gave his son-in-law Robert, a power of attorney to collect certain debts in 1769.
Robert, who was declared tax-free in 1783 because of age, died in Greenbrier Co. in 1805.
Known children of Robert (1708) and Mary Bailey (our line)
(1) Rachel was born in 1753. She married James Kennedy on 9 September, 1791 in Rockingham Co., Virginia.
(2) WILLIAM was born in 1753 and married Mahala (Emily) Wood about 1774. William was a Revolutionary War soldier and became a miller. He owned land in Monroe Co. and the deeds mention his wife "Millie". He apparently held slaves and at one time was granted leave to take custody of his man York and to be responsible for his behavior. He sold his land in 1797 prior to his move to Knox Co., Tennessee in 1797. This part of Knox Co. later became Anderson Co. William died 11 June,1830. He left a will but named no children. His clothing was purchased by a William Sr. and a William Jr. His wife Millie died 2 July, 1847 at age 93. (William is our ancestor)
(3) James was born 15 March, 1765 and married Rachel Wood on 18 March 1776. James died in Anderson Co., Tennessee on 12 February, 1809. He and his wife had fourteen (14) children.
(4) Isaac was born about 1756 and married Mary A. Ward, a daughter of John Ward. They had at least four (4) children.
(5) Kiziah, nothing known.
(6) Sarah was born about 1760 and married James Christy on 5 July, 1780 in Greenbrier Co. Virginia. James was born on 12 May 1746 in London, England and became the first minister of the Rehobeth Methodist Church in what is now Monroe Co., West Virginia. Sarah died about 1800 and James died in 1840, both in Monroe Co., West Virginia.
(7) David was born ca 1762 and married Eliza Anderson in Greenbrier Co., 3 May 1786. He owned land in Monroe Co., moved to Anderson Co. Tennessee and was an early taxpayer (1805) along with his brothers.
(8) Robert, a possible son of Robert and Mary, was born about 1766 in Bedford Co. He married Mary McGuire in Franklin Co., Virginia on 28 November, 11785. Robert died in Franklin Co. on 6 October, 1855 intestate. His inventory was substantial.
The probable children of William (1753) and Milly Wood Scarborough are:
(1) WILLIAM, (our ancestor) was born about 1775 in Greenbrier Co. Virginia and married Catherine (Kittie) Clemons in Knox Co. Tennessee on 15 March, 1800. William had purchased 150 acres on Round Stone Fork in Lincoln Co. Kentucky. The deed is dated 16 August, 1798. This part of Lincoln Co. became Rockcastle Co. in 1809. William and "Caty" must have settled the land shortly after their marriage in 1800 although the deed was not filed until 1802. Taxes were paid by William from 1804 until he died in 1814. (This death is recorded in the family bible as being 24 February 1814.) After his death the taxes were paid by Caty until her apparent death about 1822. After this time there is no record intil they were paid by a William in 1827. (No deed exists for the sale of this land).
The Kentucky Census of 1810 show William and Caty having four boys and one girl under ten years of age, with William and Caty both under 45. In 1820 the census shows the home with one boy under 10, two 10-16, two 16-18, one girl 10-16, one 16-18, and Caty 26-45. The name does not appear in the Kentucky Census of 1830.
(The records of Rockcastle Co. were destroyed in a fire when the Court House burned in 1877. Only tax records and the Census data have been available for historical purposes.)
2) James, born ca 1774 may be James Grantzer who married Janey Shannon in Greenbrier Co. Virginia in 1794. If so, he moved to White Co. Tennessee and died there.
(3) John M-g-m-T was born about 1777. (This name appears as written in the family bible. It is likely that the initials mean "Minister of the Gospel and Methodist Trustee.") He married Susan J. Shannon and died in Anderson Co., Tennessee on 8 August, 1830.
(4) Agnes was born on 3 February, 1787 in Greenbrier Co. Virginia and married Michael Hassler about 1805 in Anderson Co. Tennessee. She died on 14 June, 1863 in Roane Co. Tennessee and is believed to have had twelve (12) children.
(5) Jonathan Lupton was born on 20 July, 1795 in Greenbrier Co. Virginia and married Elizabeth Nunnley on 12 January, 1815. They had eleven children prior to the death of Elizabeth, all born in Anderson Co. Jonathan Lupton later married Fannie Davis on 25 August, 1844. They had six children, all born in Anderson Co.
Jonathan Lupton died on 22 December, 1867 and is buriied at the top of Pine Ridge, Anderson Co. in an arboretum controlled by the University of Tennessee. Besides leaving a large group of relatives, his Bible has helped in research on the family line.
WILLIAM (1775) our ancestor, and Catherine had seven children before the death of William. The names of all these are not known. However, the census records of Kentucky in 1850 give three probable sons who state they were born in Rockcastle Co. These are:
(1) William, born in 1802 and Married Elizabeth Jane Brock, who was born in 1806 in Rockcastle Co. and died in Casey Co. Kentucky about 1870. Elizabeth apparently died about the same time as no records can be found for them after 1870.
(2) Henry (Harry?) was born about 1803 and is first found in the tax tables of Rockcastle Co. in 1839. He is next in Garrard Co. in 1846 and owned 25 acres on Fall Lick in 1847. He married Sarah Winnkler and lived in Rockcastle Co. in 1854.
(3) Harvey (?) born 1805 married Salley Michael. He was first listed in the Rockcast1e Co. tax rolls in 1839 as owning 50 acres in Roundstone Creek.
(4) JOHN (JONATHON) (our ancestor) was born in Kentucky in 1807. He is first listed on the Rockcastle Co. tax tables in 1842 and was living as a widower in 1850 in Rockcastle CO., with five children: William H. age 15, Jonathan age 12, Sarah age 9, Harvey age 7, and Susan age 5. All were born in Kentucky. The names of these children also indicate a tie with the Anderson Co. family.
The History of Jackson Co. Missouri tells of William Scarborough, a farmer, who was born 8 November, 1857 near Richmond, Kentucky. His parents were William Henry who was born in 1837 and Nancy Ellen Stocker Scarborough. William and his first wife Sarah Bryan of Kentucky had nine children: John Henry, WILLIAM HARRISON, George, Mary Ann, Margaret Ellen, Leslie, Earl, Laura and Homer. Sarah died in 1890 and he married Mrs Amanda Chapman in 1895. She had four children previously and then two more with William. These were Orville and Howard.

The Scarborough family came from London, England. John Scarborough and his son John came to America with other Quakers in 1682 and they settled in Pennsylvania. John, the son, married in Pennsylvania and one of his daughters, Sarah Scarborough married George Haworth, the first of that line to come into America from England. This marriage united these two lines which were later to become a part of our Canaday line.
The earliest Scarborough that I have information on is William Scarborough, and it is with his life that I begin. There are possible references that an Isaac Scarborough was the father of William, but I am not certain.
==WILLIAM SCARBOROUGH==
William Scarborough was born in England, probably in London, in 1598. Nothing is known about his wife, but they had at least one son, John Scarborough.
William lived on Hosier Lane in London. He lived there all his life. I assume he was a merchant or tradesman, but have no information. He was a Quaker, a very early one, and attended the Peel Monthly Meeting on Peel Court in London.
He is buried at Burnhill Fields in London. This is the cemetery where George Fox the founder of the Quaker religion is also buried.
==JOHN SCARBOROUGH I==
John Scarborough was born in London in about 1620. He lived all his life in London. Again, nothing is known of his wife, but he had at least one child, John the second.
John was a blacksmith and a coachman. Like his father, he was a Quaker and attended the Peel Monthly Meeting.
John died at age sixty six, so it was probably about 1686. He is buried in London as is his wife.
==JOHN SCARBOROUGH II==
John Scarborough was born in London in 1649. There he married Sarah Ashby on February 22, 1663. Sarah was not a Quaker, but the children were. John was a coachman and blacksmith by trade like his father. He also was a member of the Peel Meeting.
In 1682, he accepted William Penn's open invitation to come to America where freedom of religion could be found. He took only his eldest child, John m, on this voyage to America. He purchased, for five pounds, 250 acres along Neshaminy Creek near Langhorne in Bucks County. He purchased the land while in England on July 4, 1682 and arrived in Pennsylvania in October of 1682. He stayed in Bucks County, just north of Philadelphia for almost two years.
In 1684, he returned to England to get the rest of his family and to return to America. His wife Sarah was deathly afraid of the long sea voyage, and they never came back to America. John remained in London until his death on April 11, 1706. As far as I know the re~ of the family also remained in England, with only his son John remaining in America.
==JOHN SCARBOROUGH III==
John Scarborough, the third of that name, was born in London in 1667. As a young man, he came with his father to Pennsylvania in 1682. He was to remain here for the rest of his life.
John spent some ten years in the then wilds of Bucks County living with the Indians before he became married.
In about 1689, he married Mary Pierson. Nothing is known about Mary, except family tradition has it that she may have been of part Indian descent. Mary was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania in about 1676.
John Scarborough died in Solebury Township, Bucks County on January 27, 1727, Mary died there on January 23, 1751. Both may have been buried in the Buckingham FBG, but I do not know. Both were Quakers.
John and Mary Scarborough had eight children, all born in Buckingham Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania:
WILLIAM SCARBOROUGH was born October 30, 1691 and died in April of 1727. He was disciplined for disunity at the Falls, Pennsylvania Monthly meeting on 2-1-1713.
SARAH SCARBOROUGH was born on February 4, 1694. She married George Haworth on September 28, 1710. Her life is contained in the main HAWORTH FAMILY HISTORY which preceded this history. They raised seven children in the area of Lahaska in Bucks County. These children, who are covered in the Haworth History were: STEPHANUS, ABSALOM, RACHEL, JOHN, JAMES, MARY and GEORGE. George Haworth died on November 28, 1724. Sarah married again in 1731 to Mathew Hall. By Mathew, she had four more children: DAVID HALL, born July 7, 1732. He married Deborah Fell on December 21, 1758; MAHLON or MATHEW HALL, born November 12, 1733 and died in 1818. He married Jane Higgs on April 21, 1757; MARGERY HALL, born January 23, 1734/35 and died in 1804. She married Arnold Warner in 1753; SARAH HALL, born November 24,1736 and died in 1810. She married John Pearson in 1756. For the Haworth children, refer to that history.
MARY SCARBOROUGH was born on August 8, 1695. She married Samuel Pickering. This event was recorded on 11-7-1712 at the Falls MM.
