Meu sobrenome Machado vem, até onde pude estudar, de Viseu, na Beira Alta, Portugal. Aparece por gerações conjugado com o Freire (Machado Freire).
Tenho duas versões do mesmo nome:
1- Machado is a surname commonly found in Spain, Latin America, Portugal, and Brazil, derived from Latin (Marculatum) Machado[1] meaning axe. In Aramaic Makkaba and Modern Hebrew Makebet - also spelled Machabees - it is the surname of Judas Machabee, that was later extended to all the descendants of Matityahu ben Yoḥanan HaKohen, head of the Hasmonean family, who had 5 sons. Jewish Encyclopedia reveals faithfully 5 hammers hatchets[2] for this Coat of Arm family’s surname. The surname may be associated with Jewish background as listed in Archivio di Stato di Genova, Comunità Israelitica di Genova.[3] (State Arquives of Genova – Israelite Community of Genova). Jews are attested in Genova since Roman times. Two letters written in the years 507 and 511 by Theodoric, the Ostrogothian king, speak about "jura veterum" (old rights) of the Jews and the right to "rebuild" the roof of the synagogue given to the Jews of Genova. This surname is one of the most frequent found in documents from Genova’s Synagogue (Italy). The word machado means axe in the Portuguese language.
2- O sobrenome remonta ao passado Português da nossa história, possivelmente oriundo dos descendentes açorianos que se estabeleceram no Rio Grande do Sul. Machado é de origem Canária (Gran Canaria é uma das principais ilhas do Arquipélago das Canárias que pertenceram a Portugal), originalmente portuguesa e está relacionado com a ferramenta machado, possivelmente derivado de uma atividade comercial daquele que o vendia ou fabricava. Foi registrado como sobrenome no século XII. Há historiadores que explicam o sobrenome pela ação de “romper com machados as portas de Santarém a 15 de março de 1147”, por parte de Dom Mendo Moniz, senhor de Gandarei, descendendo, pela linha masculina, de D. Sancho I e, pela linha feminina, do Conde D. Osório de Cabreira, que passou a pertencer a Portugal no tempo do Conde D. Henrique.

Some of Machado families though may descend from A'ad-Cha-Ma son of A-War-Ak-Ham-Ma'alle of whom also the country of Tchad ( Cha-A'ad ) and Adamawa might have been named. Perhaps he is the one who was called by greek mythographs Athamás ( A'ad-Cha-Ma ) or at least one of the persons of this name at them.
Languages in Adamawa region and around lake Chad may distantly be related not just to some dialects of Australia-Papualand but also to bantu which is the royal variation of arawak tribal speech relocated into Libya from about 654 b.c. as a consequence of Babylónia attack to the Holy City of Roraima .
