About the Hart surname

Noman Donald ( my father ) was one of 5 brothers.... namely, Dudley, Claude, Lionel, and Edgar. The sisters were, Linda, Dorothy, Frances, Molly, and Una. They were all born in the Kokstad district, (South Africa ) and their father was from Sussex ,or Surrey, cant remember which, in England. I think he stayed on here after the Boer War. He married a Miss Snoek from the Kokstad area and they lived in the village of Bizana. Norman was a farmer in the Harding district, Claude farmed in Swartberg, Dudley was the Postmaster in Bizana, Edgar was a cheesemaker, then bacame an estate manager for Illovo Sugar Esttates in Port Shepstone, Lionel also had a small farming operation and a Trading store in the Lusikisiki district.


Bricklayer Edward Hart was sentenced to seven years jail aboard a prison hulk for stealing food and drink to feed his wife and family in 1825. Edward, his wife Sarah Hart (nee Culley) and their three children arrived in New Zealand on board the 'Tyne' in 1841. Hart Family of New Zealand
