It is a French surname. The original name was Garrigues, but it was anglesized. Some people changed it to Garrick. The name is from a region of France that has brambles, lichens etc. My ancestor was Jean Garrigues. He was married to Suzanne Rochet. He was a Huguenot minister and there was some speculation that he was a converted Jew (converso) but he didn't convert to Catholocism so he was banished. Rather than be killed he and his wife took a ship to the Hague, Holland where they had children and lived a number of years. Later on they went to Martinique ,a French possession , and lived some number of years. Eventually the family emigrated to the U.S arriving in Philadelphia, Pa. They moved from Pa. to New Jersey, Va., N.C., Tn,Ark. and then my father ended up in Oklahoma.
