If your ancestors' surname in the U.S. was Garlick, and they were Jews from Germany, then it's possible their surname was originally Knobloch (the German word for garlic.) My great-great-grandmother Bertha had the surname Knobloch in Germany but changed it to Garlick in the United States, like many others with her surname.
