About the Agricola surname

The name Agricola refers to 'farmer' or 'agriculture'. During the times, the name had been adopted by several people (or families) from all over the Europe.

If directed here from the Nordic Noble Surname Project the name Agricola refers at least to the following two Finnish families.

i) Mikael Agricola's family. While Mikael Agricola was a bishop of Turku, Finland, his son Kristian Agricola was a bishop of Reval (Tallinn), Estonia (albeit both Turku and Tallinn, back then, were parts of Sweden). Christian Agricola was ennobled in 1584, but the family was never introduced. Agricola himself died in 1586, and left only a daughter (who married to the family Svinhufvud af Qvalstad) so, on the male side (svärdssidan) Mikael Agricola's family (ätten) died with Christian.

ii) About the same time, in Viipuri, Finland but also in Turku, there was also a prominent priest called Christiern Simonsson Agricola who has no family ties to the Mikael Agricola's family. He, however, is an ancestor to an ennobled family Leijonmarck.

And, given the resemblance between the names, as well as everything else surrounding those two, often times Christian and Christiern get mixed. It is hoped that this would clarify the issue.
