Inquisitions Post Mortem for William de Ufford, earl of Suffolk (Writ missing).

"Joan late his wife, daughter of Alice late wife of Edward de Monte Acuto the sister of Margaret Mareschall, countess of Norfolk, the two sisters being daughters and heirs of Thomas de Brotherton, late marshal of England."

The earl died on 15 February last [1382] without heir male of his body, but whether Isabel, his wife, is pregnant or not the jurors know not.

Roger de Skalys, knight, Robert de Wylby, knight, and Henry de Fereres, knight, each aged 30 years and more, are his kinsmen and heirs.

Biography

William de Ufford, 2nd Earl of Suffolk, KG (c. 1339 – 15 February 1382) was an English nobleman in the reigns of Edward III and Richard II. He was the son of Robert de Ufford, who was created Earl of Suffolk by Edward III in 1337.[2] William had three older brothers who all predeceased him, and in 1369 he succeeded his father. In the 1370s, he participated in several campaigns of the Hundred Years' War, but this period was not a successful one for England. Suffolk was closely connected to Thomas Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick and John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, and his conciliatory skills were highly valued in national politics. He helped arbitrate in the conflict between Gaunt and the parliamentary Commons during the Good Parliament. In 1381, Suffolk took part in suppressing the Peasants' Revolt in East Anglia, after narrowly escaping the rebels himself. He died suddenly in 1382 while attending parliament, and since he had no surviving children, his title went extinct and his property was dispersed.

The Earl had been twice married. His first wife, Joan de Montacute, died in 1375, in her twenty-seventh year, and was buried at Campsey. It may be guessed that her death was caused by grief for her children, for she had issue four sons and a daughter, who all died young, shortly before their mother.

The Earl married secondly, before 27th June 1376, without the King's license, Isabella, widow of John Lord le Strange of Blackmere. (111) She was one of the ten daughters of Thomas Beauchamp third Earl of Warwick K.G., and was, therefore, the sister of Elizabeth, wife of Sir Thomas Ufford K.G., who has been already mentioned. ...

Sir Robert de Ufford of Wrentham became on the Earl's death the heir male of Ufford.
