About William de Puttenham
William, son of Thomas de Warblington who settled the manor of Sherfield in 1405 unpon himself and his wife Julia. In 1425 William settled the manor on himself and Margery his wife, widow of Sir Peter Besilles and their issue male and a further settlement was made on them in 1444, probably owing to the failure of their heirs, with contingent remainder to Henry Puttenham, son of Margaret Puttenham, eldest daughter of John de Warblington, the grandfather of William. William de Warblingtondied in 1469 and his widow Margery, having outlived Henry Puttenham, died in 1484, when William, son of Henry Puttenham settled the Manor in 1485, upon his son George on his marriage with Alice, daughter of Thomas Wyndesore. Robert, son of George Puttenham conveyed the manor in 1550 to his second son Richard.
ROGER de PUTTENHAM
Roger was the eldest son of John and Alice. He was granted the manor in 1304/5 from Sir Thomas Wale to be held in knight's fee. He was the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire, a very important position, in 1322. Roger was the first to acquire lands in Penn, Bucks in 1315. He died sometime around 1330.
Their children were Roger, Thomas, John and William. William and John lived in London.
Upon Roger's death, his wife, Alina, married Thomas de Hay and they jointly ruled the manor from 1340 for her lifetime.
(XI) William, son of Robert de Puttenham of Puttenham and Penne, was commissioner of the peace for Herts in 1377, and was called "of Berk Hampstead." He was sergeant-at-arms in 1376. He married Margaret, daughter of John de Warbleton, who died in 1375, when his estates of Warbleton, Sherfield, etc., passed to the Putnams. They had children: Henry, Robert and William.

I recieved this book from the church Warden in Puttenham. It was written by M.C. Vincent. Who was a member of the church that our ancestors belonged to. In my opinion this would be the best source on our family history as she would have had access to proper records. The title is The Church and Manor of Puttenham,Hertfordshire A History of England in Miniature.
She draws our line from Robert Puttenham who married Margaret de Warbleton. Henry, John of Eddlesborough who was the brother of Nicholas of Penn. Then Richard.
She also states that the only Male heirs were those of John of Eddlesborough. I take this to mean that the other lines are extinct in there male lineage. She Also says some students of the pedigree suggest that Roberts brother Richard was the grandfather of John of Eddlesborough.
Here we have two camps contradicting each other. This suggest to me we have no solid proof if we are Decendants of Robert or Richard.
It is Roberts line that is for sure armigerous meaning they have a right to a coat of arms. It is fact that Sir Roger de Puttenham II was a knight but his arms according to the College of Heraldry in England can not be proven. He may have or may not of had a Coat of arms no proof can be found.
