William Clements was the son of John Clements and Elizabeth Terry. He was born about 1682 in New Kent County, Virginia (which became known as King William Co., in the year 1700). The property in King William Co., was most likely gifted to William by his parents John & Elizabeth after his father had settled the family in Hanover County, VA and William was old enough to receive. William was the oldest son. By 1735, William was married to Ann _ _ _ _ (maybe a Parker?) and had received a land patient in Amelia County, VA, where the family settled and their kids all grew up. According to William Clements,'s Will of 1760, William and Elizabeth had at least 7 kids listed below:

  • 1. Benjamin Clement
  • 2. John Clement
  • 3. William Clement
  • 4. Francis Clement
  • 5. Elizabeth Clement Ford Ellyson (1st Husband: Hezekiah Ford, 2nd Husband: Gerald Ellyson
  • 6. Barshaba Clement Major (Husband: Samuel Major)
  • 7. Ann Clement Pigg (Husband: John Ghent Pigg)

(Note: It would seem that there is NO daughter by the name Rebecca, who might have married a Paul Pigg)

In 1741, William Clements served as presiding Judge and appointed Sheriff of Amelia County. He died before 28 of February, 1760 in Amelia County, VA, when his Will was probated.

Other Spellings for the name Clement in other documents: Clements, Clemens, Clemans, Clemmons, etc. It all depended on the Transcriber and what they heard.

A Time Line for William and son John Clement:   1737 --  William and his son John were living above Flat Creek. The tithable list for that year listed William with three Negroes.    1738/9, 12 January – (1) Amelia County appointed Clement to survey a road to be cleared. (2) Later that same year, he bought 50  acres on the river from Edmund Franklin.  1744, November – (1) William owned a mill. (2) Amelia County appointed him and his son-in-law Hezekiah Ford to clear a road to Clements Mill. (3)The mill was probably on the  Appomattox River, as  Henry Cox had sold Clement ? acre on the north side for a mill. (4)That same year William made the list of tithables between Flat Creek and the Appomattox River.   1746, May -- Amelia County prosecuted William for stopping the river with his mill.  William deeded land to his sons and sons-in-law.   1739, 18 September -- William Clement made three deeds of land in Amelia County and Ann, his wife, relinquished her dower right. (1) A parcel of 200 acres went to Hezekiah Ford for £20  (2) 275 acres went to William Clement for £20. (3) a parcel  to John Clement - 300 acres for £30.   1743, 14 June -- William Clement sold his son-in-law, Samuel Major, 200 acres in Amelia County for £10. This deed was also recorded in King  and Queen County.  1759, 24 May – William purchased a 150–acre parcel of land from William Ross for £70.  1760, 25 September -- William bought 150 acres from George Evans for £60. (This was next to the150-acre parcel he had purchased from William Ross in 1759.)   From Deborah Isenmingers Family tree

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/32119008/ ...We see William Clements of King William County (Land Patent Book 17, page 164, Richmond) being granted 1227 acres in Amelia County on the Appomattox River and Bent Run in the year 1736. This William Clement served as one of the presiding judges of the Court of Amelia from1741-1755, when he was appointed sheriff (Amelia County Records). He died in 1760 and his will, probated in February of that year, named sons Benjamin, John, William, Francis, and daughters, Elizabeth, Ann, and Barsheba....

From Clemons DNA project: There is much incorrect data and guestimations at dates on the Internet. This record is the work of several descendants and is based on records and not false guesswork. Intense work went into this record, and it is as close to accurate as we can get.

My dates differ from other researchers. I have found that too many speculated dates have been based on pure guesswork and not on the data available. I started with the 1680-83 birth year for William of Amelia based on the fact that when he migrated to Amelia Co from King William Co in 1735 he was not more than 55 years old. I do not believe that a 65 year old man, in 1735, was migrating into virgin wilderness. Most 65 year old men in 1735 were either writing their wills or already dead. I have worked from the known dates to estimate the approximate dates. Dates that are approximate are preceded by the traditional genealogical symbol for "about", which is "c", the symbol for circa which is Latin for about.

The outdated misinformation about William of Amelia was the work of a descendant about 75-100 years ago. Her date of Wm's birth was speculated several generations ago by the assumption that he was the son Benjamin of Gloucester and ignorance of the fact that he was the son of John of Hanover. Her record was based on a very scanty search and the lack of DNA testing at the time. We have searched all of the VA records and there is no other William who could have been the son named in John of Hanover's will. That and the fact that William was in Amelia Co with his youngest brother Simon is strongly conclusive. DNA testing of descendants confirms it.

Even prior to DNA testing, the evidence showing that William was not the son of Benjamin of Gloucester is found in the Abingdon Parish records which name the children of Benjamin; sons were Richard, Benjamin, Thomas and George (in another record). No William. This has been an intense, on location 5 year search based on a comprehensive search of all of the Clements lines in early VA, substantiated by DNA findings. William was the son of John and he was born c 1680, not 1670.

Based on all the extant records and the corresponding dates, William Clement of Amelia Co VA was the son of John of Hanover, b c 1680- 1683, and died 1760.
