In 1657 William Chapman bought the house and lot of Capt. Denison.
In 1691 he was sexton of the church and was paid 40 shillings in addition to his annual salary of L3 to ring the large brass bell at Mr. Saltonstall's ordination.
A Catalogue of the names of the early Puritan settlers of the Colony of Connecticut with the time of their arrival in the country and colony, their standing in society, place of residence, condition in life, where from, business, etc., as far as is found on record collected from records by Royal R. Hinman, Hartford, 1852:
Chapman, William, of New London, in 1657, bought the house and lot which had been Capt. Denison's, purchased from Mr. Blinman, agent of John Chynnery. (Caulkins, History of New London, page 93) He rang the first bell at New London, "a large brass bell," as Miss Caulkins says, "to signalize the entrance of Mr. Saltonstall on his official duties. It cost £25 in current money, and for ringing it, he had 40s. added to his salary of £3, as sexton." Wm. was a freeman at New London in 1669. There is no evidence that Robert, of Saybrook; William, of New London; or John, of New Haven, were relatives.

The comments above are a part of the introductory comments included in Rev. F. W. Chapman's 1854 account of the family. He did not provide the names of any prospective parents or wives. Sources for that information need to be reviewed and documented . The "LDS" sources cited were added by John M. Chapman in one of his efforts to expand this data. While these may be valid we know the LDS-IGI does contain much error so we need to search out the IGI source record to validate it. The names of all the children were found in the will and the years of birth were provided in the original account unless shown as estimated (est) or otherwise noted. The source of the parents names is unknown. New London, CT is/was a city, township and county. It was established as one of the original counties of CT in 1666. Keep in mind that most public records were maintained by the town, which was the township rather than the city or the county. Few sources have made it clear which "New London" they referred to so all of our New London records just show "New London, CT." Investigate further at the probable source if it is important. The association has a collection of several family group records from various sources that are going to be integrated into this record. The source of the record along with their "Chappie" reference is listed below. If and where their data is used their reference will be cited as the source. Narrative 2 William Chapman first appears in 1657, when he bought the Dennison house-lot on Hempstead Street. New London, New London, CT, nearly opposite the jail.[17] What is known is that William Chapman bought the Denison house lot in 1657, situated on what is now Hempstead Street in New London. Rev. F. W. Chapman recounted a deed of William Chapman's, dated 1663, as: "William Chapman hath given him thirty ackers of upland bounded towards the south with Mr. Douglas his land, and towards the east with the small brook that leads the north with Arkuabukie* Meadow, and towards the west with a ledge of rocks and a tree marked on four sides." F.W. Chapman included a note that there was some doubt about the orthography of this word.
On August 25, 1691, it was voted at a New London town meeting that: "whereas William Chapman had formerly allowed him by the town three pounds for his sexton's place by the yeare, they now add forty shillings more and order him five pounds per year for sweeping the meeting house and galleries and ringing the bell." There appears to be no information on the ancestry or origins of William Chapman Sr. of New London, nor is the name of his wife known. The names of his children do not appear in New London town records and are known only by William Chapman's will, written April 1, 1696 and proved January 10, 1699. Genealogist F.W. Chapman concluded that William Chapman of New London was probably not a kinsman of Robert Chapman of Saybrook.[18] The children named in his will were: John, William, Samuel, Jeremiah, Joseph, Sarah and Rebecca What is known about the Chapmans of New London is that they intermarried with many of the early families of New London County: the Allyn, Ames, Avery, Ayers, Bill, Button, De Wolfe, Eddy, Hale, Heath, Jewett, Leffingwell, Lester, Rouse, Spicer, Stark, Stoddard, Tabor, Taylor, Thurber, Waterman and Wentworth families. They farmed the land, as did most of their townsmen, they served in various capacities in the military, and they were involved in town and religious affairs.

William Chapman 1633-1699 appears a better candidate as father for John Chapman (1653-1750). William clearly came from England as a young man and purchased land just after our John's birth. The "John Chapman, S." previously in this tree never left England......yet our John seems to have a record of birth in Nov 1653 in New London.
