About Willem Janszen Roome
Alternate birthplace, Rotterdam, Netherlands
Willem Jansen Roome (Romen) was evidently a native of Holland, probably from Werckendam, a Province of North Brabant, as when the son Jan Willemsen, who accompanied his father to New Netherland, was married, that place was named as his former home. The father, wife and son are believed to have arrived in this country about 1660. This date can only be arrived at by considering that the second son, who married in 1684, was born in this country. The father, Willem Jansen (William son of John) married again on April 12, 1676, to Marritje Jans. He is recorded as the widower of Jannetje Jans and she as the widow of Jan Theuniszen. Willem Jansen then lived at the “Fresh Water,” the present Roosevelt Street, Manhattan.
