Biography According to Stephen White[1], Vincent Breau was born around 1631 and his origins are unknown. Another theory is that he was part of the Brault family who were on Governor d'Aulnay's seigneury in La Chausée France.[2] Around 1661, we find Vincent in Acadia, when he married Marie Bourg, daughter of Antoine Bourg and Antoinette Landry. Between around 1662 and 1685, the couple had 12 children: Marie (dit Vincelotte), Antoine, Marguerite, Pierre, son unknown, Anne, François, Jean, Marie, Jeanne, René, and Elisabeth. At the time of the first Acadian Census in 1671[3], the family was living in Port-Royal, Acadia (Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, Canada). Forty year old Vincent and 26 year old Marie were living with their four children. Four arpents[4] of their land was cultivated and they had 9 cattle and 7 sheep. Their homestead was situated on the north bank of the Dauphin (Annapolis River) to the east of the Belleisle Marsh.[1][5] Sadly, Vincent died in his 50s sometime before 1686, leaving his widow to care for the children aged 2 months to 22 years. On page 20 of "A Breaux Family History" Gerald P. Breaux wrote: "Vincent Brault was born in 1631 in France and was from LaChaussee, region of Loudun, department of Vienne. He arrived in Acadia in the year 1652, as a single man approximately 21 years old. Vincent was destined to become the 'Adam' of the entire Acadian line of descent bearing his name and it's later derivatives. All family branches - regardless of name spelling - converge upon this one man, since he was the only male member of the family to settle in Acadia and produce descendants.

At about age 30, Vincent Brault married a 16-year old native Acadian girl, Marie Bourg, and raised a family of 11 children, consisting of 5 boys and 6 girls....Marie was the eldest daughter of Antoine Bourg and Antoinette Landry, who were among the earliest settlers, arriving in Acadia as newly-weds in 1636. They also originated from the same place in France as Vincent Brault.... Thus, it appears that these early settlers were closely related and associated even before their arrival in Acadia.

The family of Vincent Brault and Marie Bourg was raised in Port Royal, Acadia. The spelling of the name was apparently modified to Brot - perhaps to signify a new beginning in a new land.This new land presented an environment that was distinctly different from Vincent's homeland in France." -- Norma (Aubey) Lewis

Biography of Vincent Brun
Stephen White gives his birth date c. 1611. Lanctot says 1611 also and that he was recruited by Claude de Razilly, brother of Isaac, from Chinon. He arrived in Acadia in 1636; left and returned in 1648 to settle. After his wife died he married her sister, Renee. Progenitors-Those Most Misunderstood, Acadian Genealogy Exchange, Volume 23, Number 4 (Oct 1994), p. 119: These facts have been verified by the Centre d'Etudes acadiennes as accurate. "Vincent Brun and one other Acadian were from LaChaussee, all the other names below said to be from Martaize or LaChaussee were derived from conclusions derived by researcher Genevieve Massignon. Later research generally disproved these conclusions."

Vincent arrived in Acadia in 1652; as a single man approx. age 21 years; he was a farmer in Acadia.

Researchers found a second Vincent living with hes mother, Mary Reneaume, in the area of St. Jean de Sauves after 1671 (19 years after Vincent left for Acadie), but he is referred to as Vincent le Jeune (the Younger). They say it was fairly common practice among the French at the time to have an older brother or sister as the god-parent of a newborn sibling and to give the infant the same name as the god-parent. In this case the older Vincent, who went to Acadie, would have been godparen* to the younger brother, also named Vincent, who remained in France. --"A Breau Genealogy" by Clarence T.
