About Vice Admiral, USN Charles Bowers Momsen

VICE ADMIRAL CHARLES BOWERS MOMSEN

He was a pioneer in submarine rescue for the United States Navy. He invented the underwater escape device later called the "Momsen lung" for which he received the Navy Distinguished Service Medal in 1929. In May 1939, Momsen directed the rescue of the crew of USS Squalus (SS-192), a diesel-electric submarine built at the Portsmouth Navy Yard, Portsmouth, New Hampshire and commissioned there on 1 March 1939, suffered a catastrophic valve failure during a test dive off the Isle of Shoals at 0740 on 23 May.
