About Tuwahinenui Waekamania Shortland

H.Shortland 1 July 2004: Sir James Henare said that according to the story of Ngati Hine all our whakapapa is fine except the tupuna here is not Willoughby Shortland but a jewish named Mordicai. Some of the Shortland whanau have followed this Mordicai line. Tau Henare Genealogy 1980 lists Moriki (pakeha) as spouse to Tuwahine Kawiti. W.Shortland 27 Nov 2009: Tuwahine first three children were to Mordechai, a Jew. Only speculation remains as to his surname, as he was exiled by Kawiti in favour of a union between his daughter and Ruatara Tauramoko. Ruatara was Kawiti's battlefield lieutenant. We believe Moriki returned to Europe and remained there the rest of his life. HOTERENE KAWITI-2ND child of TUWAHINE & MORIKI. MORIKI was a Jew who migrated to N.Z. and married the daughter of KAWITI (KAWITI?S 2nd marriage). They had 3 children - RIRIA, HOTERENE, HOHAIA (JOSAIA). Later on, Kawiti re-arranged another marriage for TUWHAHINE to RUATARA TAURAMOKO, and then banished MORIKI. MORIKI left for AUSTRALIA, taking RIRIA & HOHAIA. RIRIA was later allowed to return to N.Z. under the pleas of her Maori relatives, however, MORIKI did not allow HOHAIA to leave him. To this day the whereabouts of MORIKI & HOHAIA are unknown, including any possibility of their decendants.
