Tpr. Harry Hassard Wall

Harry Hassard Wall was born at Wairau in the Martinborough area of New Zealand's South Island on 19 August 1892 (reg. 1892/10718). His parents were Sydney Thomas Kingswood Hoyle Wall and Maggie Mabel Hassard Wall (nee Keys) who had married in New Zealand in 1887 (reg. 1887/2695). Sydney and Maggie divorced at Napier in 1906 and Sydney remarried to Augusta Rebecca Debour in 1910. It is not yet known what happened to Maggie. Harry served with the Otago Mounted Rifles during World War I (Service No. WWI 9/997A). He was killed in action at Gallipoli on 21 August 1915. 23-year-old Harry is remembered on the Hill 60 New Zealand Memorial. His father, Sydney, died at Cook County Hospital in Gisborne, New Zealand, just 11 days later, on 1 September 1915. He was buried in the Taruheru Cemetery at Gisborne.
