Torsten Nils Wiesel "(born 3 June 1924) is a Swedish neurophysiologist. Together with David H. Hubel, he received the 1981 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, for their discoveries concerning information processing in the visual system; the prize was shared with Roger W. Sperry for his independent research on the cerebral hemispheres."
Add note:
Torsten's paternal grandfather, Samuel, adopted the name Wiesel, a surname carried by his ancestors. Torsten cognatically descends from the famous Wiesel family, a family that had a profound impact on science, theology and culture in the 17th, 18th and 19th century Sweden. The progenitor of the family is Simon Haraldsson, tax farmer and jury man at Almås estate in Virestad, Småland, who rode to Stockholm on a horse to meet Duke Charles of Södermanland, later King Charles IX, to obtain mercy on behalf of his friend Per Folkesson. Several famous people and families descend from this man, primarily via his son the vicar Haraldus Simonis Almosius Wiesel.
Other descendants include:
The Nobel laureates in Literature Harry Martinson and Pär Lagerkvist, sobriety advocate and dean Peter Wieselgren, professor of theology, natural scientist and friend of Carl Linnaeus Samuel Ödmann, professor of physics, astronomy and clergyman Samuel Heurlin, author and founder of Småland's Museum Gunnar Olof Hylten-Cavallius, Bishop of Växjö Isac Heurlin, poet Georg Ingelman, the author of psalms Lina Sandell, engineer and polar explorer Salomon August Andrée, Tiger Wood's ex-wife Elin Nordegren, actress Scarlett Johansson.
The Wiesel family and its agnatic and cognatic branches managed to produce remarkably four hundred clergymen.
