About Torsten Nils Wiesel, Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine, 1981
Torsten Nils Wiesel "(born 3 June 1924) is a Swedish neurophysiologist. Together with David H. Hubel, he received the 1981 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, for their discoveries concerning information processing in the visual system; the prize was shared with Roger W. Sperry for his independent research on the cerebral hemispheres."

Torsten's paternal grandfather, Samuel, adopted the name Wiesel, a surname carried by his ancestors. Torsten cognatically descends from the famous Wiesel family, a family that had a profound impact on science, theology and culture in the 17th, 18th and 19th century Sweden. The progenitor of the family is Simon Haraldsson, tax farmer and jury man at Almås estate in Virestad, Småland, who rode to Stockholm on a horse to meet Duke Charles of Södermanland, later King Charles IX, to obtain mercy on behalf of his friend Per Folkesson. Several famous people and families descend from this man, primarily via his son the vicar Haraldus Simonis Almosius Wiesel.
