Thurstan (Toustain) de Bastembourg, Seigneur de Briquebec

Charles Cawley in the Medieval Lands Database (FMG) states that his parentage as unknown. Others have traditionally believed Thurstan de Bastembourg to be the son of Anslech de Briquebec, a powerful early Norman lord.

Thurstan's son, Guillaume Bertran(d) became Seigneur de Bricquebec. Cawley notes that "Guillaume de Jumièges names "Bertrand et Hugues de Montfort dit le Barbu" as sons of "Toustain de Bastenbourg"[1473]. According to Europäische Stammtafeln, he was ancestor of the family Bertrand de Bricquebec but no further details are given."

Anslech de Briquebec - alias Oslac de Briquebec, a powerful baron, associated with [1.1.1.2.3] Bernard the Dane in the administration of Normandy - tutor to 'Duke' Richard of Normandy. He married Gillette de Beaumont -unknown pedigree. In the rebellion of Richard de St. Saveur, son of [1.1.3.1.] Helgi against [1.1.1.3.1.1.] 'Duke' William Longsword, in 933, Anslech is mentioned by Wace as one of the three Barons who alone remained faithful to the Duke, his second-cousin, by rendering him military service at the seige of Rouen. Their son was Turstain de Bastembourg, 'père de Guillaume, tige des Bertran' [Gustave Saige, Cartulaire de la seigneurie de Fontenay le Marmion, p. 29, 1895]. 'It is deserving of observation that the senior branch of the family held the extensive barony of Bricquebac in Normandy for eight successive generations. The last died as late as the 14th Century, leaving his large possessions, and the castle of Bricquebec, which one of his early ancestors had built, to his eldest daughter, who carried them by marriage to William Paisnel [Paganel], Baron of Hambie' [Memoirs Chiefly Illustrative of the History and Antiquities of Northumberland, Royal Archeological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland, vol. ii., pp. 48-50, 1859].

1. GUILLAUME Bertran . Guillaume de Jumièges names "Bertrand et Hugues de Montfort dit le Barbu" as sons of "Toustain de Bastenbourg"[2288]. "…Willelmus Bertrannus" witnessed the charter dated 24 Apr 1089 under which Robert III Duke of Normandy donated property to Bayeux cathedral[2289].

2. HUGUES [I] "cum barba" de Montfort-sur-Risle (-killed in battle 1040). "…Hugo vicecomes filius Turstingi…" witnessed the charter dated to [1030] under which Robert II Duke of Normandy confirmed rights of Mont Saint-Michel[2290]. Seigneur de Montfort-sur-Risle. Guillaume de Jumièges names "Bertrand et Hugues de Montfort dit le Barbu" as sons of "Toustain de Bastenbourg"[2291], in an earlier passage recording that "Hugues de Montfort fils de Toustain" fought Gauchelin de Ferrières and that both were killed in battle[2292], dated to the early part of the reign of Guillaume II Duke of Normandy from the context of the passage. m ---. The name of Hugues's wife is not known.

3. GISLA de Montfort-sur-Risle . Guillaume de Jumièges records the marriage of Giroie and Gisela daughter of "Toustain de Montfort"[2312].
