Thomas Bennett, of Mulberry Creek

His parents and birthplace are NOT known for certain. Many people Wild-Mass-Guess him onto Governor Richard Bennett's tree, but there is no supporting evidence for that.

May have been married (and widowed) before Alice Pierce - two Thomas Bennetts are reported in the 1624/5 Muster, but neither one with a wife Alice (one had a wife Margery, one was associated with an 18-year-old "Mary" who may have been a wife, a daughter, or a domestic servant).

Bennett, Thomas Neptune unk [probably 1618] - aged 38 at muster at Besses Choyce, listed with Mary aged 18 on Southhampton [1622], Roger Heford and Benjamin Simes. (Hotten, p. 242)

Thomas Bennett was a Member of the House of Burgesses as he represented Mulberry Island in 1632 (Burgess Journals 1619-59, p. xiii). Mulberry Island is in Warwick Co., and as Warwick's records were destroyed in the Civil War, nothing more can be found out about Thomas Bennett.

Thomas Bennett was born CA 1587. He is listed in the 1624 census of Virginia on the S/S of the James River, near Lawne's Creek.

Shortly after this census Thomas Bennett married Alice Pierce, widow of Thomas Pierce who was killed in the Massacre of 1622 at Martin's Hundred, as their son Richard was born CA 1624/5 Thomas Pierce's wife and daughter had been reported as killed, but had survived.

In October, 1624, Elizabeth Pierce, daughter of his wife Alice, chose her "father-in-law" (stepfather) Thomas Bennett, as her guardian. On that same date, Alice Bennett testified in a trial concerning a servant who had been mistreated by her master, Mr. John Proctor, after her husband Thomas Bennett, and a Mr. Richards had carried her home. Thomas Bennett appears as a tenant on the Governor's land, at the mouth of the Chickahominy, Jan, 1626/7.

Thomas Bennett served in the House of Burgesses representing Mulberry Island in 1632. Mulberry Island is in Warwick County, whose records have been lost. No further record has been found on Thomas Bennett.

There is much disinformation regarding the Bennet/Bennett families of Berkshire, Somerset, and elsewhere (mostly trying to force them together when and where they don't go).
