He was feudal overlord of the district of Crawford, which was held of him by his powerful vassal William de Lindsay.1 In 1188/89 he settled in Perthshire, when he granted lands in Gowrie to the monks of Scone.

The name Sweyn may be a british version of the Norwegian / Swedish i.e. Norse name Svein which means boy or young man. Thor-aldus is a combined name with Norse roots, based on the god-name Thor i.e. thunder after which also thursday has its name.

Notes ◦also known as Swane of Swinton. Thought by some to be the namegiver to Swinton (Swane's town).
