Sir Thomas Southworth, Knight, of Samlesbury (son of Sir John Southworth, Sheriff of Lancashire & Helen de Langton) was born about 1497, of Samlesbury, Lancashire, England, and died on 13 January 1546.

He fought at Flodden Field (9 Sept 1513), was High Sheriff of Lancashire (1542), and enlarged Samlesbury Hall (1542-1545) (VCH Lanc. Vl, 306)

He married (1) Ann Stanley (div) & (2) Margery Boteler, daughter of Sir Thomas Boteler of Bewsey and Margaret Delves, on 9 August 1518.

Children of 2nd wife include

2. John b. c 1526, d. 3 Nov 1595. Married Mary Ashton.

Sir Thomas, son and heir of Sir John, first married Ann Stanly, from whom he was divorced; he married, second, Margery Boteler, daughter of Thomas Boteler. He restored Samlesbury Hall in 1532, and erected the minstrels' gallery. He also built the southeast wing, which forms the main part of the structure, and completed it in 1545. He was at the battle of Flodden, 9 Sept., 1513, and in one of the ballards is alluded to as

"The sad Southworth that ever was sure."

He was high sheriff of the county in 1542. On several occasions he was a member of commissions to hear testimony and decide as to the truth in certain legal cases. He seems to have been of an arbitrary disposition and unpleasant to deal with, a man of strong will, who was determined to have his orders obeyed where he had a right to command.

Thomas Southworth was knighted in Scotland in 1523 (fn. 44) and served the office of Sheriff of Lancaster in 1541–2. He married first Ann Stanley, from whom he was divorced, and secondly in 1518 Margery daughter of Thomas Butler of Bewsey, kt., to whom he was related in the third degree. (fn. 45) He restored the west wing of the Over Hall in 1532 and rebuilt the south wing in 1545. (fn. 46) He died 13 January in the following year, his son John being twenty years old. (fn. 47) From Christopher brother of Sir Thomas descended the Southworths of Wyke Champflower. (fn. 48)
