Robert Wingfield, Esq. of Upton was born at Orford, Suffolk, son of Sir Henry Wingfield, Governor of Orford Castle and Elizabeth Rookes, daughter Sir Robert Rookes of Fawley, Buckinghamshire. Robert Wingfield came from a cadet branch of the Letheringham, Suffolk Wingfields.

His only other living sibling was his older brother Thomas Wingfield who was later Captain of Deal Castle. Robert Wingfield married Margery Quarles, daughter of John Quarles, Gentlemen of Ufford, Northamptonshire and his wife Amy Plumsted.

Robert Wingfield was the Ducal Auditor for Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, from 1523-1545. Robert and Margery Wingfield lived at the Duke's estate at Westhorpe during this period with his widowed mother Elizabeth Rookes Wingfield.

King Henry VIII granted Robert Wingfield, Esq. fee the whole manor and moiety of Upton and Ailsworth, Northamptonshire for £252, which previously belonged to the late Queen Jane Seymour and previously in 13th century by Eleanor of Castile. In Upton, Robert became a substantial sheep farmer.

Robert was admitted to Gray's Inn in 1529, Commission of gaol delivery of Peterborough in 1540, and Commission of Sewers in 1564.

Children of Robert and Margery Wingfield were: Robert, John and Elizabeth. Robert married Elizabeth Cecil, daughter of Richard Cecil, Esq.; John married Anne Callibutt, daughter of John Callibutt, Esq; and Elizabeth married Robert Sampson, son of Simon Sampson.

Robert Wingfield, Esq. of Upton was buried at St Kyneburgha, Castor. Robert's will dated 14 June 1575 and proved 6 July 1576 at the London Court of the PCC, PROB 11/58/255
