Born at Kettleby (Ketilby), east from Brigg on A1084, Lincolnshire England. Six generations lived at Kettleby (Ketilby). Sir Robert built Kettleby Manor house, which was demolished in 1697. The foundation is covered by a modern farm house and surrounded by a moat and fish ponds. (located off Kettleby Lane, south of Wrawby)

Notes: grantee of Cameringham and Stainfield, at which latter place he built the mansion bearing that name, long the residence of the Stainfield branch of the Tyrwhitts, its first baronets. This gentleman, High Sheriff of Lincolnshire; Knight of Kettleby; Knighted at Touraine 1513; Vice-admiral of England; and a banneret, was seneschal of the priory of Newstead, as also of Elsham, and bailiff of Barton on Humber, in 1535.

Sir Robert Tyrwhitt, the only son of Wiliam Tyrwhitt and Anne Constable, was knighted, and sheriff of Lincolnshire, 15 Hen. VIII. and by his wife, the daughter of Sir Gilbert [sic: Robert] Tailboys, of Kyme, in com. Line. Knt. had issue, three sons; and six daughters;

1. Sir William, of Kettleby.
2. Sir Robert, who left only a daughter and heir, Catherine, married to Henry Darcy, Esq; son and heir to Sir Arthur Darcy, Knt. second son to Thomas, lord Darcy.
3. 3. Philip, of whom hereafter.

The daughters were,

1. Anne, married to Bolles, of Hough, Esq;
2. Agnes, married to William, son and heir to Sir William Hansard, Knt.
3. Elizabeth (c), to William Monson, of South-Carleton,Esq;

Maud TAILBOYS [daughter of Sir Robert Tailboys and Elizabeth Heron] ] 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 was born 1483 in Kyme, Lincolnshire, England. She married Sir Robert TYRWHIT Knight (b.c. 1480 - d. 4 Jul 1548) on 1501 in Kettleby, Lincolnshire, England. He was the son of William Tyrwhit (d. 9 April 1522) and Anne Constable.

The heir of Sir William Tyrwhitt and Anne Constable his wife was Sir Robert Tyrwhitt, of Ketilby, Knight and Bannerett, said to have been sometime Vice-Admiral of England in the time of Henry VIII.S Born 1482 [21 Edward IV). He served the office of Sheriff of Lincolnshire, 15 Henry VIII. (A.D. 1524). He received a grant of the Priory of Cameringham, originally an establishment of Premonstratenses, in 27 Henry VIII. (A.D. 1545), and of Stainfield Priory, formerly a house of the Benedictine order, in 29 Henry VIII. (A.D. 1549, Harl. MS., No. 6287).

At as late a date at least as 1610, this Sir Robert's arms remained in a window in Bigby church, depicted on painted glass : “Quarterly, clubbes in their handes.” The shield was placed in an oblique position, and in the sinister corner was a barred helmet in profile mantled, gules and or, and surmounted by the crest on a wreath, viz., “Lapwing's head and neck erased, or.” This crest is generally found only in those coats of the Tyrwhitt arms, the bearers of which were entitled to supporters, and assumed the “wilde” men as such.

The seal of this Sir Robert Tyrwhitt is circular, with this inscription surrounding the above shield: “Ex antiquo quodam sigillo olim Domini Roberti filii et hæredis Domini Willielmi Tyrwhitt, Militis Banneretti, qui obiit, 1522.” 1

At Stainfield, he (or his third son, Philip), built a mansion, a long the residence of the Tyrwhitts of Stainfield, deriving from that Philip; in which branch was the first baronetcy of this name.

This Sir Robert was also made Seneschal of the Priories of Newstead-on-Ancholmes and Elsham, and Bailiff of Barton-on-Humber-all in North Lincolnshire, 26 Henry VIII. (1543).

He married Maud, daughter of Sir Robert Taylboys, of Goulton and Kyme, co. Lincoln: representative of the ancient baronies of Taylboys, Umfreville, and Kyme, and aunt of Gilbert, Lord Taylboys, of Kyme, created a baron by Henry VIII.

The eldest son, Sir William Tyrwhitt of Scotter, died, as we shall see, on 19th March, 1541, leaving (with other children) his eldest son and heir, Robert, who succeeded his grandfather at Kettleby in 1548.

In the autumn of 1541, King Henry VIII., with his then Queen, Catherine Howard, his Privy Council, and Court, after visiting Lord and Lady Burgh at their “moated manor place" at Gainsborough, went into Yorkshire; and on his return came across Humber" to Barrow-on-Humber, and spent three days at the dissolved Abbey of Thornton, where he had lately founded a College of a dean and prebendaries, as to which see post, p. 26.

The King and his Court next visited Sir Robert Tyrwhitt at Kettleby, remaining there two days, viz., the 8th and 9th October. The tradition gleaned on the spot in 1853, by the Rev. R. E. Tyrwhitt, was that, on the occasion of the royal arrival, “the Tyrwhitt hanged the trees on the way from Kettleby to Brigg with carcases of sheep and beasts (oxen), to show that he could feed all comers.” Temporary buildings of wood served to lodge the inferior members of the household.

On the 11th October, the King was at Kenby, or Cainby, the seat of Mr. Tourney, who had also married a Taylboys. On the 12th he was at Mr. John Monson's, at South Carlton, near Lincoln. This gentleman, then an aged man, appears to have been knighted on this and died on the 26th May following. His son and heir, William Monson, had married Elizabeth, daughter of this Sir Robert Tyrwhitt, of Kettleby, and Maud Taylboys his wife, and by her was great-grandfather of the first Lord Monson, created a peer in 1727. The inscription on the tomb of her husband, in South Carlton church, is here given, from Harl. MS., No. 6829:

Sir Robert died 4th July, 1548 [2 Edward VI.], at Kettleby, and was buried in Wrawby church, where he had an aisle called “Kettleby Choir” (as to which, see post). He was lord of the manors of Wrawby and Brigg, as well as Kettleby and Bigby. In 1852, a very large and thick tombstone was dug up in Kettleby choir. His monument remains in the chancel, but thoroughly defaced by taking away the brasses at some long-passed period, probably in the time of the Commonwealth.
