Although he occupied a distinguished place in the society of the north Midlands during Richard II reign, Francis held most of his many offices and commissions under Henry IV, who appears to have regarded him with particular favour. The royal pardon accorded to him in June 1398 was no doubt little more than a formality, yet he felt scant attachment to the court party and his real allegiance lay with the house of Lancaster.
