About Sir Giles de Plaiz, 1st Baron Plaiz
BARONY OF PLAIZ (I) 1297
SIR GILES DE PLAIZ, brother and heir. Custody of the lands and marriage of the heir were granted to Queen Eleanor II February 1284. On 8 June 1294 he was summoned, when war with France was being prepared, to attend the King on urgent affairs; and on the 14th was one of those excepted from the general summons to the King's tenants to muster at Portsmouth. He was one of three nominated in the Rape of Lewes to assist in the defence of the Sussex coast. He was summoned to the assembly of peers and magnates (considered for peerage purposes a Parliament) at Salisbury, 26 January 1296/7, and is thereby held to have become LORD PLAIZ. In 1297 he was summoned for service overseas, and in 1297, 1298, and 1301 against the Scots.
He married Joan (
), and died shortly before 15 October 1302. His widow had order for assignment of dower 20 January 1302/3; she was living in March 1332/3. [Complete Peerage X:539, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
