About Sir Gilbert Fraser, Kt., Sheriff of Tweeddale

  • NOTE: There has been much conjecture about the identity of Gilbert's father and ancestry leading to no Primary source-based conclusion. Stirnet shows a father being "(Gilbert?? Fraser)" Or "Udard Fraser probably the Udard of Drumelzier (Perthshire) shown by Mackenzie as son of Gilbert & brother of Oliver". As of 2024, Medlands goes on to say the following about spotty early Frasers:
    • "The early generations of the Fraser family cannot be reconstructed with certainty. However, the repetition of certain names, for example Simon, Alexander and Bernard, suggest that all the different branches which are shown below were related and descend from a common ancestor. The family has been studied in detail by Alexander Fraser, Lord Saltoun whose three volume work was published in 1879[588]. This work is scholarly, and balanced, although a little wordy. Above all, it does not try to invent connections which cannot be corroborated by primary source data, while at the same time indulging in sensible speculation."
  • Here are FMG’s untethered early Fraser fragments:
    • 1. SIMON Fraser (-before [1190]).
      • a) EDNA Fraser…m PHILIP Marshal.
    • 2. GILBERT Fraser -after [1166/82]).
    • 3. UDARD. m ---, daughter of KYLVERT & his wife…Adam & his wife had one child
      • a) ADAM Fraser (-after [1214/16]).
        • i) LAWRENCE Fraser (-before [1292/1306])…
      • b) [BERNARD Fraser…] {NOTE: Medlands doesn’t assign to him a wife or children}
    • 4. THOMAS Fraser….

The Scots Peerage, Vol. 7, p. 418

  • “There was an Udard Fraser mentioned in the charters of some of his descendants, who lived in the latter half of the twelfth century [Cart. Newbottle, Nos. 74, 76, and 77], and married a sister of Oliver, son of Kylvert above mentioned, who is said to have been the founder of Oliver Castle in Peeblesshire [Frasers of Philorth, i. 15, 16]. He was the father of Adam Fraser,...During the early part of the thirteenth century the three chief Frasers in Scotland were Bernard, Gilbert, and Adam, who were all probably the sons of Udard [Ibid., i. 13].”
    • NOTE: The bold word 'probably' above indicates a lack of a primary source. It's probably for this reason that Cawley and crew do not link father and sons. (Vol. 7 "Fraser" author: Alan S. Carnegie)

    • “Pedigree of the Frasers of Philorth, Lords Saltoun” p. xiii — Only here does it show Udard as father.
    • From chapter “The Frasers in East Lothian”
      • On pp. 15-16 — “UDARD FRASER—All that is known of Udard Fraser is gathered from the occurrence of his name in the charters of some of his descendants [Cart. Newbottle, Nos. 74, 76, 77]. from which it appears that he lived during the latter half of the twelfth century, and that he married a sister of Oliver, son of the Kylvert just mentioned, who is said to have been the founder of Oliver Castle, in Tweeddale [Caledonia, vol. i. p. 555; vol. ii. p. 918], and in all probability was so, and whom Adam Eraser, Udard Fraser's son, will be found to call avunculus, which, though sometimes used for uncle on either side, means maternal uncle, unless the context affords evidence to the contrary; patruus being the proper term to express that relationship on the father's side [Cart. Melrose, Nos. 48, 72, 74, 77, 101, 104].
      • On pp. 24-25—This portion is devoted to Gilbert. Nowhere in it is Udard mentioned with a source.
