The pedigree begins with ADAM, and proceeds, through four subsequent descents (JOHN, son of Adam, RICHARD, son of John, RICHARD, son of Richard, all in Saxon times), to
NIGEL DE HODELSTON, who gave to the abbey of Selby two carrucates of land and a half in Millum, and part of his tythe in Hodelston with the soccage, &c. Witnesses, THOMAS, Archbishop of York; WILLIAM, the Deane; and WILLIAM, Treasurer, This Nigel had two sons, viz.

  • GILBERT (Sir), living in the time of HENRY II., who, with consent of ROGER, his son, gave to the monks of St. Clement, in York, "that whole meadow which in under their habitation." "In the Red Book of the Exdhequer, inb the charter ofRoger, Archbishop of York, these whose names follow, with many others after them, are said to hold of the said archbishop, viz. William, Earle of Albemarle, holdeth 3 knights fees; Henry de Lacye, two knnights fees; Roger de Moibrai, one third part; Herbert, son of Herbert, 3 knights fees; GILBERT, the son of NIGEL, II knights fees, wch Nigel is stock ancestor to the Huddlestones."

By an ancient deed the Lady Sybel de Hodelston was endowed in the manor of Quittington, with appurtenances, &c. in the 34th of EDWARD I. The eldest son and heir,
SIR JOHN DE HODELSTON, Lord d'Anys, was summoned to a council at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and ordered, on the 26th September, in the 26th of EDWARD I. to attend the king at Carlisle with horse and arms, in the record of which he is styled a baron (see Appendiz tothe Peerage Report). he was also one of the great council, wo subscribed in 1301, the celebrated letter to Pope Boniface VIII. declaring "that their king was not to answer in judgment, for any rights of the crown of England, before any tribunal under heaven, &c. and that by the help of God they would resolutely, and with all their force, maintain against all

men." To this important document were affixed the hands and seals of arms of 104 of the earls and barons, amongst whom JOHN DE HODELSTON was the 89th. Sir John assisted at the celebrated siege of Karlaverock, anno 1300, in the train of the Earl of Lincoln. he m. temp. HENRY III. JOAN, daughter and sole heiress of ADAM DE BOIVIL, Lord of Millum,* in Cumberland, and had four sons, RICHARD, his heir, Adam, John, and Robert. Sir John Hodelston claimed free chase between the waters of Eske and Dudene, also Infangenthef in Millum, Seton, Booth, Kirkstanton, &c. He was s. by his eldest son,

SIR JOHN HODLESTON, knt. Lord of Millum, who had permission to hold a market on every Wednesday at his manor of Bothill, in the county of Cumberland, and for a fair to be holden in the same place four days in the evening, and on the day of the exaltation of the Holy Cross, and the two days following; witnessed by William Talbot, steward of the King's Palace at Westminster, 24th October, 21st EDWARD III. Sir John Hodleston was one of the collectors of the tenth and fifteenth granted by the laity of Cumberland to the king, and he obtained, according to Lysons, license in 1335 to embattle his mansion at Millum. He m. Maude, daughter of Sir William Pennington, and was s. by his son,

SIR JOHN HODLESTON, Knt. of Salston, m. the Honarable Dorothy Sutton, daughter of Edward, Lord Dudley. He was sheriff of the counties of Cambridge and Huntingdon in the third of RICHARD III. and was s. at his decease by his son,
SIR JOHN HODELSTON, knt. privy counsellor to Qeen MARY, vice-chamberlain to King PHILIP, and captain of His Majesty's guard. This gentleman enjoyed in a pre-eminent degree the confidence of his royal mistress, as evinced on the proclaiming of Lady Jane Grey, when her majesty repaired privately to Salston, and that she might the better disguise herself rid behind Sir John's servant to Framlingham Castle. "Besides other great boones," saith Fuller, " Queen MARY bestowed the bigger part of Cambridge castle, then much ruined, upon him, with the stones, whereof he built his fair house in this county." Sir John m. Bridget, daughter of Sir Robert Cotton, knt. of Lanwood, in Cambridgeshire, and had issue,

Sir John Hodelston died 4th November, 1557, and was s. by his son,
SIR EDMUND HODELSTON, knt. of Salston, in the county of Cambridge, who m. Dorothy, daughter and heir of Henry Beconsall, esq. of Beaconsall, in Lancashire, and had one son and four daughters, viz.

  • Henry, his heir.
  • Frances, m. to George Wild, esq. of the county of Warcester, serjeant at law, and d. 29th November, 1630.
  • Jane, m. to Sir Walter Wiseman, knt. of Brodon, in Essex.
  • Isabel, m. to Edward Fortescue, esq. of Faulkborn, in Essex.
  • Dorothy, m. to Henry Hastings, esq. son of Sir Henry Hastings, knt. of Leicestershire.

Whilst the house at Salston was erecting, Sir Edmund resided on his estates in Essex, and served the office of Sheriff for that county in the 20th, 21st, and 30th of ELIZABETH. He died at his sister's, Lady Lovel, in the 5th of JAMES I. and was succeeded by his son,
HENRY HODELSTON, of Salston. This gentleman m. Dorothy, daughter of Robert, first Lord Dormer, by his wife, the Honorable Elizabeth Brown, daughter of Sir Anthony Brown, Viscount Montagu,* and had four sons and two daughters, namely,

  • ROBERT (Sir), his heir.
  • John, who d. s. p.
  • HENRY, of whom presently.
  • Edmund.
  • Mary.
  • Elizabeth.

He died in 1617, and was s. by his elder son,
SIR ROBERT HODELSTON, of Salston, gamekeeper to King CHARLES i. at Newmarket, who m. first the Honorable Mary Roper, daughter of Christopher, Lord Teynham, by whom he had a son HENRY, who pre-deceased him unmarried. Sir Robert wedded secondly, Mary, daughter of Richard Tufton, esq. and niece of Nicholas, Earl of Thanet, but had no issue. His brother,
HENRY HODELSTON, esq. lieutenant-colonel in the service of King CHARLES I., m. Mary, daughter of William Havers, esq. of Thelton Hall, in Norfolk (see vol. i. p. 382), and dying in 1659, was s. by his son,
RICHARD HUDDLESTON, esq. of Sawston. This gentleman m. Mary, daughter of Richard Bostock, esq. of Wexhall, in the county of Salop, by whom (who died 30th August 1729) he had issue,
