Simon Stone of Watertown and Gregory Stone of Cambridge, the original emigrants, were born in Much Bromley, now Great Bromley, Essex County, England, and their ancestry has been traced beyond reasonable doubt to Symond Stone of Much Bromley, who died in 1510. Symond Stone of Much Bromley owned a property called "Walles," situated in Ardleigh, which he bequeathed to his second son, Walter Stone. Ardleigh and Much Bromley are adjoining parishes and their churches are only three miles apart.
The Stones mentioned in the Court Rolls of Ardleigh are of the same family from which Simon and Gregory Stone, the emigrants, descended. The will of Symond Stone of Much Bromley, dated May 12, 1506, probated Feb. 10, 1510, names four sons, David, Walter, Myhyll (i. e., Miles), and William.
Born about 1507 in Great Bromley, Essex Co. England. Probably was given the estate called ":Churchgate" or "Heintz" by his Uncle Walter Stone. His life was passed during the reign of Henry VIII(1509), Edward VI(1547-1553), and Mary(1553-1558). A time of turmoil in the church., culminating in the Act of Supremacy in 1534 separating the Church in England from papal authority. Catholicism as re-established temporarily under Mary, with persecution of Protestants. A few months after the death of Simon Stone in 1558 Mary died and Elizabeth became queen. This ended the inquisition and abolished the power of the Roman Church in England
There were three known children; John, David, and Richard.
This memorial is dedicated to my ancestor Simon Stone. He was the son of David and Catherine Stone. He married Agnes Speed in 1533 at Great Bromley, Essex County, England. Simon and Catherine were the parents of John and David. Their two grandsons Gregory and Simon immigrated to America on the ship "The Increase" from Ipswich with their wives and families ranging from one month old to 16 years, landing in Massachusetts in April three months later.
Simon Stone was probably born about 1507 in Great Bromley, Essex. His uncle Walter Stone bought the estate called "Churchgate" in 1520. Walter apparently didn't have any children, for he gave the estate to Simon. In 1533, Simon married Agnes Speed at St. George the Martyr in Great Bromley. He must have accompanied his father from Great Bromley to Kirby-le-Soken in 1540, because after his father's death, Simon took his father's place on the tax list in 1544. The next year he was back in Great Bromley, where he was assessed in at least three tax lists. He lived in Great Bromley until his death in 1557. He must have had quite a bit of land, because he was assessed on land, not personal property, and his taxes were substantial. Agnes outlived him and was mentioned in his will, dated July 28. 1557. Simon and his cousin Robert Stone were churchwardens at Great Bromley in 1552. Simon lived during the period of the reformation. (additional bio info provided by Ken Smith)
