About Samuel Jervois Cussen

Perhaps the same person as Samuel Jarvis Cussen - research in progress.

RECORDS THAT DEFINITELY RELATE TO THIS INDIVIDUAL

  • Baptism at St Mary Cork City RC of Samuel Cussen son of Patrick Cussen & Ellen Jervois on 21 August 1816 (see attached document in sources).
  • His parents Patrick Cussen & Ellen Jervois were involved in several cases in the Chancery court, although Patrick died in 1836, before the case was resolved. However, very usefully, Patrick & Ellen's children were listed as participants in the case, so Samuel Jervois Cussen is listed by his full name in 1843 & as Samuel Cussen in 1835. (see attached documents in sources).
  • Father Patrick Cussen's will has only survived as an index entry; Patrick Cussen of Ballyfeard, Co Cork, 1836

RECORDS THAT POSSIBLY RELATE TO THIS INDIVIDUAL

  • Possibly the Samuel Cussen who emigrated to NSW, Australia on the Orient, arriving on the 6th July 1838 aged 21, a native of Kinsale, Co Cork, his parents are recorded as Patrick Cussen and oddly, Ellen Hungerford (Hungerford most likely a miscommunication/ clerical error arising from close connections between the Jervois and Hungerford families). Noted as being able to read and write.
  • Possibly the Samuel Jarvis Cussen who married Jane Sullivan in 1841 at Maitland, NSW, although the marriage index has his name as Samuel Cuper. It would be useful to see the original handwritten entry, as it is most likely a mis-transcription of the C19th "long S". It is unlikely that he used an alias. Transcript only : Ref No 1841 V141-23 Samuel Jarvis Cussen of Maitland married Jane Sullivan on 14th February 1841 in the parish of West Maitland, in the County of Northumberland, religion: Roman Catholic. Witnesses: James Callaghan & Elizabeth Callaghan both made their mark as did Jane. Samuel Jarvis Cussen signed. Bride and groom both state they are members of or hold Communion with the Roman Catholic Church. No parents are given.
  • The above mentioned Samuel Jarvis Cussen and Jane Sullivan had the following children:-Thomas Emanuel 1841 -Charlotte Ellen 1843 -Samuel Jervis 1845 -Patrick 1848 -Jane Catherine 1852 -Anne Elizabeth 1853. It is to be noted that this sequence, (possibly only reflecting surviving children) does not indicate that the "Irish naming pattern" was followed for parents named Patrick & Ellen or Thomas & Charlotte. These names do however echo those of Patrick Cussen and Ellen Jervois's family. https://www.genealogy.com/articles/research/35_donna.html
  • The above mentioned Samuel Jarvis Cussen (husband of Jane Sullivan) died at Narrabri in 1894. The Death index gives his parents as Thomas Cussen & Charlotte Jarvis. The informant was apparently his grandson William Cussen Cormie, who was most likely confused about the names of his great-grandparents. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cussen-61
  • Friday 10th August 1894. DISTRICT NEWS. (From our Correspondents.) PILLIGA, The winter we have just passed through has been the most severe within the memory of the oldest inhabitant there having been a succession of sharp frosts last month and the mercury frequently down to 30 degrees [F]. Speaking of the oldest inhabitant though I used the expression in its hackneyed sense. I have to record the demise of one of the oldest residents of the Namoi, Mr. Samuel Cussens senr, who has just passed over to the great majority at the advanced age of 76 years. The deceased arrived in the colony early in the forties* and after spending some years at Maitland and about the Hunter district removed to the Castlereagh and Namoi districts. The old man had a vivid recollection of early colonial events, more particularly in connection with early history of Maitland and was fond of relating his early colonial experiences. The annual epidemic of influenza is now doing its rounds almost every household having its share of this sickness. [*note: married in 1841, so more likely to have arrived in 1838]
