  • c1050 Born in the village of Arbrissel ( Ille-et-Vilaine ) in the diocese of Rennes in Brittany. His father was a married priest named Damalioch and his mother's name was Orguende. Succeeded his father as rector of Arbrissel and, like him, to have lived with a woman
  • 1075 Supports Sylvestre de La Guerche as Bisop of Renne. Sylvestre de la Guerche was married and father of two sons, the future William I of La Guerche and Geoffroi.
  • 1078 Sylvestre was deposed by the Council of Poitiers on February 5, 1078 because he had not been ordained before being named bishop. He nevertheless retained the confidence of the Dukes of Brittany and was quickly reinstated.
  • 1078 Doctorate in theology in Paris - an ardent supporter of the Gregorian reform
  • 1089 Sylvestre de La Guerche restored & Robert is recalled him to assist him in his efforts to moralize the Breton clergy. becomes a demanding opponent of simony , incontinence and other vices of his clergy
  • 1093 Sylvestre dies - Robert leaves Rennes to teach theology in Angers - became friends with Geoffroy, abbot of Vendôme , who appreciated his intellectual and religious qualities.
  • 1093-5 – Travels as an itinerant preacher, moving across western France. Adopts the principles of poverty promoted by Pope Gregory VII and attracts many followers through his preaching
  • 1096-9 Withdraws to the forest of Craon, living as a hermit and attracting followers. Establishes a religious community in the forest of La Roë, on land donated by Renaud I de Craon - near Craon which led to the creation of lodgings which became the Abbey of La Roë . He divided them into three colonies, took charge of governing one, and entrusted the others to Vital de Savigny and Raoul de La Futaie.
  • Attracts the attention of Pope Urban II when he preaches at the consecration of the Church of Saint Nicholas in Angers
  • Moves to a valley named Fons Ebraudi with the help of Peter II , Bishop of Poitiers and causes a scandal because the men and women did not sleep apart.
  • 1100 – Participates in the Council of Poitiers.
  • Establishes the Abbey of Fontevraud, a double monastic community which nevertheless kept genders separate. He divided his followers into four separate locations:
  • 1. The Grand-Moustier with the contemplatives , choir nuns,
  • 2.Sainte-Marie Madeleine with lay sisters, women who had lived in the world
  • 3.Saint-Jean-l'Habit for the monks
  • 4.Saint-Lazare for the sisters who would care for the lepers who would be housed outside.

The contemplatives devoted themselves to the divine office (prayers) the lay sisters and the monks to work for their benefit (only the monks could say mass).

  • *Hersende de Montsoreau became involved around 1101, which is when she provided support and patronage for the establishment of the abbey.
    • Ermengarde of Anjou was one of the first members of the Angevin count's family to take the abbey into consideration. Daughter of Foulque le Réchin, she had her gifts to the abbey of Fontevraud ratified by her brother, Foulque V. She moved there around 1112 and did not leave the abbey until 1118
  • c 1104 Returns to traveling throughout France (Chartres , Toulouse , Rouen , Poitiers , Blois , Périgueux)
  • 1104 he attended the Council of Beaugency.The Bishop of Poitiers requested the bulls of confirmation from the Holy See ; and, in issuing them, Pope Pascal II declared that he was taking this order under his special protection.
  • 1115 Establishes the statutes of Fontevraud and appoints Pétronille de Chemillé as abbess.
  • February 25, 1116 – Dies at the priory of Orsan ( Cher ) Berry?
  • Christmas 1115 at the Fontevrist priory of Haute-Bruyère near Paris - fell ill and was forced to stop at the priory of Orsan , diocese of Bourges in Berry .
  • He died there onFebruary 25 1117 according to the sources, bequeathing his heart to Orsan and his body to Fontevraud .
  • The body isn't returned and the Fonteraud nuns stage a barefoot protest which results in the Archbishop of Bourges to accompanied his body to the Abbey of Fontevraud.He, who had asked to be buried in the mud of the common cemetery, was buried near the High Altar of the Abbey Church of Fontevraut
  • October 20, 1847, his remains were given to the community of the Fontevrist Ladies of Chemillé.
