Disputed Parents

The parents of Robert White are unknown. However, there is a widespread error on the internet, confusing this Robert White with a different Robert White on the other side of England, said [INCORRECTLY] to be the son of Robert White of South Petherton d. 1600 and Alice, grandson of Richard WHITE (b. Hillariance; d. May 6, 1578) married Helen (1523-1580), and great-grandson of Thomas WHITE (b. Meriot) married Agnes RICHARDS. , Somerset, whose alleged medieval ancestry is in turn the result of mistaken identity. However he might be a relative of William White, who also resided in Essex. i. Daniel White was born in Essex. Since Robert White made Daniel the joint executor with his wife, Bridget, it may be inferred that he was the eldest (surviving) son.
ii. Sarah White was baptized in Shalford on March 8, 1585/6 (Julian calendar). She married James Bowtell of Little Sailinge, county Essex.
iii. Nathaniel White was baptized in Shalford on April 30, 1587.
iv. Mary White was baptized in Shalford on August 24, 1590, and died in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut, on August 23, 1652. She and Joseph Loomis of Braintree (England) were married in 1614 in Shalford. They lived next door to her sister, Anna Porter, and her husband in Connecticut. They had a son, Joseph Loomis.
v. Elizabeth White was baptized in Shalford on March 6, 1591/2, and died in Farmingham, Hartford, Connecticut, on May 17, 1667. She married William Goodwin of Bocking in Shalford on November 7, 1616.

Biography

Robert White, was born around 1558 in Shalford, Essex England, and buried Messing, Essex, England, 17 Jun 1617 to unknown parents. He married, Shalford, Essex, England, 24 June 1585, as perhaps his second wife, [2] Bridget Allgar Bridget was baptized Shalford 11 Mar 1562, the daughter of William Allgar (bur. Aug. 2, 1575, Shalford, Essex) and Margaret Parye, sister of: Mary, who married "Ralfe BETTE"; John, who died in infancy; John; and Elizabeth. Bridget married second on Sep. 28, 1618 at Messing, Essex, John CHRISTMAS, Jr., and they had two sons: Richard and John.[citation needed] A record of Bridget's death has not been discovered.[5] She is thought to have been the the woman referred to in the 9 Jun 1623 will of Nathaniel White of Feering, Essex, England. [6]

Robert White was a yeoman; that is, he was not a member of the nobility but did own a small amount of land (small compared to a typical nobleman's estate). He was wealthy and appears to have lived in Shalford from June 1595, through his marriage until a few months before his death. Shalford is about two miles south of Wethersfield. Robert White lived for a considerable time in the parish as a fiscally liberal and a considerably wealthy man, who gave money to churches on both sides of the great controversy in England. Supporting the poor of Messing and both Rev. Richard Rogers, a non-conformist, and Rev. Bartholomew Scrivener an established church minister.

He lived most of his life in Shalford, home of his wife's family. He married Bridgette Allgar.. It is quite possible that Bridgette Allgar is related to Lettye Aggar, mother of Lydia and John Eliot, as the misspelling means nothing for those days, and all lived in the same shire and were from the upper class. The baptisms of nearly all his children are there recorded, and also the marriage of his daughters, Mary and Elizabeth. It was the home of his wife, where she was baptized in 1562, and where her father, William Allgar the elder, was buried in 1575.

At least four of Robert Whites children would emigrate to New England (John, Mary (who married Joseph Loomis). Through them, Robert White and Bridget Allgar left a notable line of New England descendants. John Porter and Joseph Loomis of Windsor, and William Goodwin and John White of Hartford. Among some of their descendants we find William Williams, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, at least three presidents, and the Wright Brothers. Anna (who married John Porter and became an ancestor of two presidents of the US, Grover Cleveland and U.S. Grant), sister Elizabeth, who married Wm. Goodwin of Hadley and Farmington.

Last Will & Testament

In his will, Robert White bequeathes 40 shillings to Mr. Richard Rogers, preacher of God's word at Withersfield in Essex. Therefore, it is likely that he was friendly to the non-conformists and attended some of their services. A like bequest to Bartholomew Scrivener, minister of the Church of God in Messing, implies that he was also interested in the established church (or was covering all of the bases). His bequest of 40s to the poor people of Messing and nothing to the poor of Shalford where he is supposed to have lived most of his life, opens the possibility that he was born in Messing.

His will was dated May 27, 1617, and indicates he lived for considerable time in the parish and was quite wealthy. He gave to support the poor of Messing, and to Rev. Richard ROGERS, a non-conformist, and Rev. Bartholomew SCRIVENER, an established church minister. Robert's will names his wife and all his children. Son Daniel and wife Bridget were named executors, and John CHRISTMAS (Sr.) and William LEVETT were witnesses. Also named are three sons in law (James BOWTELL, Joseph LOOMIS, and William GOODWIN), Ralph BETT ("my kinsman and servant"), and Joseph DIGBIE ("my servant"). The three unmarried children, Bridget, Anna, and John, were bequeathed money on the condition that they obtain the consent of their mother, and of Joseph LOOMIS and William GOODWIN, before marriage (100 marks to each daughter, and 200 marks to John). It is possible that Daniel was the son of a first wife, prior to Robert's marriage to Bridget on Jun. 24, 1585 at Shalford, Essex.

In the yeare of our Lord god 1617 I Robert White of Messinge in thecountye of Essex yeoman, beinge of good and pfect remembrance, doe make this mylast will and testament, in manner and forme followinge. I comend my soule unto the hands of god almightey my mostfaythfull creator redemer and sanctifier and my bodie to be buryed in theparish church or church yeard of Messinge, at the discretion of mine executors. In the yeare of our Lord god 1617 I Robert White of Messinge in the countye of Essex yeoman, beinge of good and pfect remembrance, doe make this my last will and testament, in manner and forme followinge. Imprimis. I comend my soule unto the hands of god almightey my most faythfull creator redemer and sanctifier and my bodie to be buryed in the parish church or church yeard of Messinge, at the discretion of mine executors. Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Anna White the summe of one humndredth markes of like lawfull mony : to be paid unto hir upon ye day of her marriage; yf soe be she shall bestow hir selfe in marriage, accordinge to the likinge and consent of my two fornamed sonnes in law, and my wife, as is aforesaid. Butt vf it so fall out, as that she my said daughter Anna shall marrye without ther consent and approbation formerly mentioned, then I give and bequeath hir only the summe of thirtey pounds of like and lawfull monie.

Item I give and bequeath unto my sounne Nathaniell White the sume of fortie pounds of like lawfull money, whereof my will is that twenty pounds shall be paid wthin one yeare next after my depture, and the other twentye pounds to be paid unto him within two years next after my said depture oute of this naturall life.

Item I give and bequeath unto my soenne John White the summe of two hundredth pounds of like lawfull monie to be paid him when he shall come to ye years of one and twentye of his age: yett provided that my said sonne John shall not bestow himselfe in marriage without the approbation and consent of my aforesaid two sonnes in law Joseph Lummys and William Goodinge, and my wife his mother. And yf it so fall oute that this my son John shall match him selfe contrarye to the good likinge and consent aforesaid, then I give and bequeath unto hint only as his full portiom the summe of one hundred pounds of like lawfull monye.

Item my mind and will is that yf any of my foresaid children thiat are unmarried shall depte this naturall life before thee tymes appointed for time payment of their portions; or yf any of them shall marrye contrarve to the consent and approbation mentioned , then such sum me or summes of monie (as shl retaine and accrew, eyther by their death or disobeydience,) shall be equally devided amongste the rest of my children whither marryed or unmarried, pte and parte like.

Item I give and bequeath unto my said son John White time ioyned standinge bedstead wch is in the parlour, with the featherbed, flockbed, bolster coveringe wth other furnevture thereunto belonginge: alsoe the presse cupbourd the cupbourd table and newest chest all wch are in the said ploure to be delivered him after the death of mv said wife Bridgett White, or instead thereof the summe of twenty marks of like lawfull monye.

Item I constitute and ordainie my aforesaid sonnes in law Joseph Lumys Willm Goodinge supuisors of this my last will and testament and do give unto each of them time severall summes of fortev shillings of like lawfull monye: towards their charge and paines in seinge this my will executed according to my minde.

Item I give and bequeath untto Ralph Bett the younger my kinsman and servant the summe of five pounds of like lawfull money, to be paid unto him within one yeare next after my depture.

In the yeare of our Lord god 1617 I Robert White of Messi nge in the countye of Essex yeoman, beinge of good and pfect remembranc e, doe make this my last will and testament, in manner and forme following e. Imprimis. I comend my soule unto the hands of god almightey my most faythf ull creator redemer and sanctifier and my bodie to be buryed in the pari sh church or church yeard of Messinge, at the discretion of mine executor s. "Robert White of Messing, a yeoman, died in 1617. He was a rich man. He seems to have lived in Shalford in Essex most of the time from June 24th, 1585, the date of his marriage to Bridget Allgar, until a few months before his death. The baptisms of nearly all his children are there recorded, and also the marriage of his daughters -- Mary in 1614 and Elizabeth in 1616. It was the home of his wife, where she was baptized March 11, 1562, and where her father, William Allgar the elder was buried Aug. 2, 1575. Shalford is about two miles south of Wethersfield."

His bequest of 40 shillings to 'Mr. Richerd Rogers, preacher of God's word at Withersfield in Essex,' renders it probably that he was friendly to non-conformists, and that he had often listened to this awakening preacher; while a like bequest to Bartholomew Scrivener, minister of the Church of God in Messing, implies his continued interest in the established church. His bequest of forty shillings to the poor people of Messing, without giving anything to the poor of Shalford, where it is supposed that he live for many hears, creates the the suspicion that perhaps Messing was his birthplace. . . .

According to his will, . . . , he left surviving a wife Bridget; three sons -- Daniel, Nathaniel and John who was his youngest child; three married daughters -- Sarah, Mary and Elizabeth; and two unmarried daughters -- Bridget and Anna. As he makes his son Daniel joint executor with his wife, it may be inferred he was his eldest son, and possibly by a former wife. His wife Bridget was the mother of his other children, of whom Sarah, wife of James Botwell of Little Sailinge in Essex, was the first born."

"It is believed that three of his daughters came with their husbands to New England, namely: Mary White, wife of Joseph Loomis of Braintree; Elizabeth White, wife of William Goodwin of Bocking; and Anna White, wife of John Porter of Felsted."

WILL: Last Will and Testament of Robert White

In the name of God Amen. May the seaven and twentyeth in the fifteenth yeare of the raigne of our Soveraigne Lord James by the grace of god Kinge of England

Robert WHITE - bur. Jun. 17, 1617, Messing, Essex, England. Said to be [but was NOT] the son of Robert WHITE (b. South Pemerton; d. 1600) and Alice, grandson of Richard WHITE (b. Hillariance; d. May 6, 1578) married Helen (1523-1580), and great-grandson of Thomas WHITE (b. Meriot) married Agnes RICHARDS. His will was dated May 27, 1617, and indicates he lived for considerable time in the parish and was quite wealthy. He gave to support the poor of Messing, and to Rev. Richard ROGERS, a non-conformist, and Rev. Bartholomew SCRIVENER, an established church minister. Robert's will names his wife and all his children. Son Daniel and wife Bridget were named executors, and John CHRISTMAS (Sr.) and William LEVETT were witnesses. Also named are three sons in law (James BOWTELL, Joseph LOOMIS, and William GOODWIN), Ralph BETT ("my kinsman and servant"), and Joseph DIGBIE ("my servant"). The three unmarried children, Bridget, Anna, and John, were bequeathed money on the condition that they obtain the consent of their mother, and of Joseph LOOMIS and William GOODWIN, before marriage (100 marks to each daughter, and 200 marks to John). It is possible that Daniel was the son of a first wife, prior to Robert's marriage to Bridget on Jun. 24, 1585 at Shalford, Essex.
