Generation No. 3
3. SIR ROBERT COLIERE (COLLYER), was born about 1515 in Stone, Staffordshire, England, and died about 1587 in Stone, Staffordshire, England. He was the son of James Colie're, 1490-1544 and Isabella Leveson, 1494-1544, and as their first-born son, became heir and Lord of the Manors Darlaston, Yarlet and Antelope.
Records show that a license was granted in 1549 to "Robert Collyer of Darlaston", (Lord of the Manor of Stone) for a market in the town of Stone.
In 1558 a Peerage and Coat of Arms was conceded to "Robert Collyer of Darlaston" by letter patent - Queen Elizabeth I from William Henry Clariencienex, King of Arms.
Robert married (1.) Joyce Scrimshire in 1536 in Darlaston, Staffordshire, England. Joyce was born about 1514 in Stone, Staffordshire, England, and died before 1553 at Darlaston Manor, Staffordshire, England, the daughter of Thomas Scrimshire and Mary Swinehead. After her death, he married (2.) Agnes Venables on 1 March, 1553. Agnes was born about 1533 in Kinderton, Cheshire, England, and died about 1586 at Darlaston Manor, Stone, Staffordshire, England, the daughter of Sir Thomas Venables and Maud Needham. Between the two wives, Robert was the father of thirteen children. Little information was found about their children and many of the birth dates are estimated, taking into consideration the birth dates of other children that are known, the marriage dates of the two wives, and birth and death dates of Robert, Joyce and Agnes.
The spelling of the surnamein the next generation is most commonly spelled "Collyer" or "Colyer", although "Colie're" and "Coliere" are still seen, even when identifying siblings who may spell their names differently. Since Collyer was most commonly used in the 4th generation, or at least the following children were transitioning toward that spelling, I am using it for all the siblings. If any reader would like to do their own research, however, I would still suggest using all the variations of the name since some, even in the case of Robert Coliere of this generation, were identified with both spellings of the surname.
