About Robert Middleton

Evidence needed to support as child of Robert Middleton, Sr. & Magdalen Middleton

"ROBERT MIDDLETON, the immigrant ancestor, was transported to Maryland, along with Benjamin Arnold and Thomas Thornton, by Benjamin Rozer of Charles County, Maryland prior to 16 Feb 1671. Born c1651 (being aged 'about 30' in a deposition filed Aug 1681), he died shortly before 6 May 1708 in Prince George's County, Maryland when Mary Middleton and John Middleton signed the bond to administer his estate. In 1681 the Council at St. Mary's City commissioned him a coronet in the Mounted Troops under Captain Randolph Brandt. In 1696 he was appointed a justice and also a coroner for Prince George's County. From 1704-1708 he was a warden and vestryman of St. John's Church of Piscataway Parish at Broad Creek. He secured his first land in 1679, being a 112 acre tract called "Wickham." He was married in 1672 to Mary Wheeler, daughter of Major John Wheeler and his wife Mary. John Wheeler gave to Robert and Mary Middleton "for fatherly love and natural affections" his 365 acre plantation "Wheeler's Hope." Besides the five known sons, there may have been others and surely daughters as well."

THE FIRST GENERATION
Robert Middleton was transported into Maryland, along with Benjamin Arnold and Thomas Thornton, by Benjamin Rozer, of Charles County, Md., prior to 16 February 1671," but the place of his birth has not yet been established. He was born circa 1651, for in a deposition he hied in August 1681 he gave his age as " about thirty years. He married circa 1672 Mary Wheeler, daughter of Major John Wheeler, of Charles County. She was born 22 March 165 8, and died post 6 May 1708. Robert Middleton died ante 5 April 1708, in Prince Georges County, Md.
From the time of his arrival in Charles County, when he was about 20 years of age, until his death in that part of Charles County that had become Prince Georges County, he was active in advancing both his own and his county’s interests, in real estate development, and in military, civil, and church affairs.

The late Hugh C. Middleton, who was long a student of early Middleton records, was a great-
great-great-grandson of this Robert Middleton. Writing from Augusta, Ga., 16 September 1924, to
Mrs. Hannah Milnor (Robinson) Ljungstedt, he expressed the opinion that this Robert Middlecon was
one of the sons of Anthony Middleton who was, he said, of Charles City, Va., in 1623, and that said
Anthony was a son of Thomas Middleton who married in England, in the late sixteenth century, a
daughter of Dedrick Anthony. He gave many supporting arguments but, in that letter, no proof.

Robert Middleton and Magdalene(Sawyer) Middleton have also been removed as parents since no reliable records have been found proving they were his parents.

Lloyd, Daniel B. The Middletons and Kindred Families of Southern Maryland. Bethesda, MD, 1975.

"The fact that an incessant stream of Middletons has entered our shores from Britain since the early days makes it extremely doubtful that the ancestors of our progenitor Robert Middleton could ever be identified with certainty. In the book “The Early Settlers of Maryland” by Gust Skordas, seventeen Middletons are listed as immigrants to the various colonies up to 1676.”
