About Richard Sadlier, Free Settler “Thames” 1825

Richard departed Cork on the ship 'Thames' on 24 Aug 1825 with his brother James. The ship was chartered to take wives of emancipated convicts to the colony. The Thames arrived at Port Jackson on 11 Apr 1826. In 1827 he was appointed by Archdeacon Scott to 'undertake the civilisation of the black natives of this colony'. In 1829 he became the master of the male orphan school at Liverpool, replacing the retiring Robert Cartwright (his future father in law). He took up residence in a two storey house in Browns Road Bonnyrigg.
