Biographical Summary from the Fasti of the Church of Scotland
John Maclaurin, born Glendaruel, Oct. 1683, son of John M., min of Kilmodan, and brother of Colin M., the mathematician; spent his early life in his uncle's manse at Kilfinan, his parents having died when he was young; educated at Univ. of Glasgow M.A. (14th Nov. 1712); and at Leyden; licen. by Presb. of Dunbarton 2nd June 1717; ord. to Luss 7th May 1719; called 29th May 1722; trans. and adm. 3rd Jan. 1723; died 8th Sept. 1754. He was a noted preacher and theologian. He conducted Gaelic services for the Highlanders resident in Glasgow , and took a leading part in the work of poor-law reform and the improvement of the social condition of the people. He marr. (1) 1721, Lilias (buried 16th Dec. 1747), daugh. of John Rae of Little Govan, merchant, Glasgow, and had issue - Elizabeth (marr. John Gillies, D.D., min. of Blackfriars', Glasgow); Lilias, buried 19th May 1725; David, buried 23rd Sept. 1727; Mary (marr. John Findlay, writer, Glasgow), died 30th Nov. 1799, aged 76; John, born 1726, buried 24th June 1742; - - (marr. Andrew Craig, surgeon, Glasgow); and three others; (2) Jan 1749, Margaret (born 22nd Jan. 1702, died 23rd July 1784), daugh. of Patrick Bell of Cowcaddens, and had issue - John. Fasti III: 439
