Allen Ratley appeared on the 1851 Drennen Roll in Illinois District along with his son Wallace and daughter Polly.[1]

When his son Wallace Ratley applied to share in the fund allocated to the Eastern Cherokee, he stated that he was born in January of 1839, his father was Allen Ratley, and his mother was Ellen Bolin. He stated that his father died in 1867 and his mother died about 1873. The only sibling he reported was Polly Ratley who was born about 1842 and died about 1870. The only sibling of his father that he mentioned was Clinton Ratley.[2]

Research Notes

There is currently no evidence tying Allen Ratley to the family of Thomas Rackley of Pickens District, South Carolina. Researchers should be aware that there is a great deal of misinformation about this family online, especially on FindAGrave, and proceed with caution.

  • Allen Rackley (Indian name Alini or A-lun-nih or Aunah ) also known as Ratliff / Ratley and Radcliff
  • Son of Thomas William Rackley born in the old Chickamauga Nation of the Smoky Mountains (a different Thomas than Thomas Rackley of Pickens District, South Carolina)
  • Allen was a student of the Brainerd Mission in Tennessee and spoke several Native languages including proper English.
  • Allen’s first known wife was Gilly Timberlake (Weaver), they separated prior 1840, by 1839 likely. Allen then moved west on the "Trail of Tears".
  • Allen served as a Native American guide & Interpreter between the Cherokees and the white man during the "Trail of Tears Removal". Allen traveled to Oklahoma aboard one of Chief Joseph Vann steamboats, where he was a river guide and interpreter to the Native Americans arriving to Webber Falls early 1838 and settled in the Illinois District of Oklahoma where he served as Cherokee Councilman from 1849-1859.
  • The Rackleys in these families of Oklahoma Indian Nation are known as Ratliff and Ratley.

  • He was a Methodist minister/preacher for the "Five Civilized Tribes".
  • Allen married secondly Ellen ‘Eli’ Bolin. They named their son Wallace (Indian Name: O-Ga-Na ‘Ground hog in his hole’) in honor of Allen’s brother who died in the old Cherokee Nation in 1838. Allen’s son Wallace was a Cherokee, elected Judge in Gore Oklahoma in 1887 and was buried in Still Cemetery. Wallace named one his sons Marion Allen Ratley.
  • Allen Rackley’s grave has not yet been located, his last known location of residence was in the Illinois District in Indian Territory of Oklahoma living in the Tahlonteeskee Indian Village near Gore or Sallisaw, Oklahoma where he had been elected as councilor for the Tahlonteeskee capitol of the western Cherokee Tribe.
