Rbzn. Udel Ashkenazi, dau. Baal Shem Tov

אדל אשכנזי (קרי: אוֹדֶל או אִידְל; ה'ת"ף – ה'תקמ"ז)[1], הייתה בתו של הבעל שם טוב, אבי תנועת החסידות. מעט ידוע בוודאות על קורות חייה, אך היא הפכה לדמות חשובה באגדות החסידים.

בשבחי הבעש"ט מסופר כי לפני פטירתו, אמר אביה ש"לקח את נשמתה מן התורה, מן הפסוק הכתוב אש דת למו (דברים, לג, ב)"

Adil, was the only daughter of Rabbi Yisroel, the Baal Shem tov, and his wife, Chana chabad ea Rochel. Her father said that he took the name ADiL from the verse in the Torah which concludes with the words, "Esh Dat Lamo" (Deuteronomy 33.2).

Adil was known for her righteousness and was blessed with ruach hakodesh. The Baal Shem Tov thought very highly of his daughter and treated her as one o fhis holy disciples. Adil accompanied her father on his attempted pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

Adil was married to Rabbi Yechiel Ashkenazi, who was known as the Daitchel ---coming from Germany. together they had three famous children:

- Rabbi Moshe Chaim Ephraim of Sudylkov, author of the Degel Machane Ephraim,

- Rabbi Baruch of Medzeboz, author of Butzina DeNehora, and

- Feiga, Rabbi Nachman of Breslov's mother.

Reb. Nachman of Breslov once said, "My grandmother, Adil, always yearned for G-ed. She constantly looked for ways to please her Creator.".
