Rabbi Yitzchak Katz, of pure Spanish ancestry, was Chief of the Rabbinical Court of Galata. One of the exiles of the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisitions, he miraculously survived along with the great Rabbi Avraham Sabbah, the great Rabbi Avraham Zacuto, and the great Rabbi Yitzchak Karo and another three Jews from the 20,000 Jews that were forcibly transported to Lisbon and forced, against their will, to apostasy. For several years he lived in Salonica with his father, and after this moved to Galata, in Constantinople, and there served as Chief of the Rabbinical Court of the community of the exiles of Spain and Portugal until his death.
