Abraham Childers was born November 15, 1752 in Albemarle County, Virginia, and died May 06, 1849 in Letcher County, Kentucky at age 97.

Married:

1. In 1784 Abraham married Elizabeth Roberts, daughter of Cornelius Roberts and Mary Benton. She was born 1768 in Amherst County, Virginia, and died February 17, 1833 in Perry County, Kentucky.

WILLIAM CHILDERS, b. 1788. 1830 Perry County, Kentucky Census records a William Childers and occupants of his home as the following: 1 female 0-5 years old, 1 female and 2 males 5-10 years old, 1 male 10-15 years old, 1 male 15-20 years old, 1 female 30-40 years old (persumablyWilliam's wife), and 1 male 40-50 years old (persumably William).
3. FRANCES CHILDERS, b. Abt. 1790.
4. DICY CHILDERS, b. Abt. 1794.
5. ELIZABETH CHILDERS, b. Abt. 1798 1830 Perry County, Kentucky Census records an Elizabeth Childers with occupants of her household as follows: 2 males 0-5 years of age, 1 female 10-15 years of age, and 1 female 30-40 years of age (persumably Elizabeth).
6. ABRAHAM CHILDERS, JR., b. 1800; d. December 29, 1887.
7. GOOLSBY CHILDERS, b.1805,Virginia; d. 1872,Carter County, Kentucky.
8. SELEY CHILDERS, b. Abt. 1807.

Brief Biography

He enlisted in the War of the Revolution in 1777 under Captain Samual Cabell; placed in 4th to 5th regiment. He was made a cook under General George Washington and served as such for 18 months. He was under Captain Pamplin and Colonel Merriweather for 3 years and discharged at Winchester one month after Cornwalllis' surrender. He was in the battle of Brandywine and in hearing of guns at Guilford. His brother, Moseby, was killed beside him at the battle of Brandywine.

• 1830 Floyd County, Kentucky Census records two Abraham Childers, persumably father (this Abraham) and son.
• 1830 Perry County, Kentucky Census records an Abraham Childers withoccupants in his household as follows: 1 female 0-5 years old, 1 male 20-30 years old, 1 female 60-70 years old (persumably Elizabeth), and 1 male 80-90 years old (persumably Abraham). until within the last 2 years. I and my father never attempted to interfere with his claim until he died.

There is many other circumstances that I could mention one in particular my uncle, brother to my grandfather was killed in the Battle of Brandywine and was shot down by the right of him. (illegible) my grandfather Abraham Childers died in what is now Letcher County Ky on the 6th day of May 1849.

Sworn to and subscribed this 13th Oct, 1855 Hither certify that the above John Childers is a man of truth and in good standing, and that Abraham Childers late of Perry Co Ky. possessed the reputation of Revolutionary Soldier from the state of Virginia. Personally appeared before the undersigned Probate Judge of said county, John Childers who being first duly sworn according to law, states upon his oath "I am the grandson of Abraham Childers late of Perry County Ky who was a claiment for a pension under the act the 7th June 1832. I am now 44 years of age. My grandfather always claimd to performed in an Army of General Washington and was his private cook, and that he belonged to The 5th Regiment commanded by Col. Merriwither at one time, and Ephraim Mayfield at another, and served as regular soldier 3 years some odd days or months (illegible) heard him (illegible) often speak of the circumstances of Moses Flatwood who belonged to the same company of my grandfather, while the Americans (illegible) (illegible) through an old field, Flatwood attempted to hull off a bunch of apples while being on some (illegible)(illegible) and at that moment a ball struck them away from his hand, and the (illegible) was so (illegible) that they could step from one to another. I and my father thought until last year that when a claiment dies, his claim died with him, and that was one reason that we did not attend to this business sooner and another one was we always thought the money had been drawn until we go the (illegible) (illegible) to examine it (scratched out). That man was a accident lawyer in Perry Co. Ky...

(Side Notes: He possesed a (scratched out) reputation of a revolutionary soldier aside from the knowledge + conversation (illegible) had with him.

The Abraham Childers that most genealogical researchers gravitate to is Abraham Childers of Perry Co., KY.He left a pension application.(National Archives, Pension # R-1922).He claimed to have been born 15 Nov 1749, in Buckingham Co., VA and served as a cook under Gen.
