Abney Mays served in the War of 1812 with Youngblood's Regiment of the South Carolina Militia. He was a private in Captain Pearson Holloway's Company of State troops of South Carolina Militia. His military records record that he Began his service on December 10, 1813. His rate of pay was 8.00 dollars per month. On March 15, 1814 he was paid Nineteen dollars and ninety-nine cents for two months and five days of service. He also received 2.66 for distance from place of discharge to place of company rendezvous, 150 miles. He was apparently discharged at this time.

There is a document dated June 30, 1834 whereas Stephen Whitley was appointed guardian of the minor children, Abner, Jesse, and Lethe of Abner Mays, Deceased. Another document signed by the widow Jane Mays asked that he be appointed guardian of the minor children. On April 4, 1836 there was another document concerning the minor children that asked that Milton Perkins be appointed Guardian of the children. Apparently , he had married the widow. On October,14, 1840, Benjamin Rosamond who married one of the Mays girls was made guardian of the minor children. Apparently, Stephen Whitley and Milton Perkins were now both deceased. On February 7, 1845, Meedy Mays was made guardian of Abner Mays who was then under fourteen years of age. On that same date, Felix Rogers was made guardian of Jesse. It is possible that Lethe had reached majority since there was no mention of him.

Meedy Mays died about January 30, 1849 and after that Abney lived with Larkin Mays.
