About Pvt. Abner Mays, Jr

Birth: 1832 Abbeville County South Carolina, USA Death: Sep. 19, 1862 Iuka Tishomingo County Mississippi, USA

Abner Mays was born in South Carolina the son of Abney C Mays and Jane Rogers of South Carolina. His father died when he was about 2 years of age, and his mother remarried to Benjamin Rosamond in ca 1843 and the family then moved to Mississippi while he was young. At the time of his death, he was married to Sarah (Sallie) Little, and the father of two known children, Laura Catherine Mays born 1856 and Josephine Mays born ca 1861. He was a farmer and overseer(1860 census), and lived in Attala County, MS when he enlisted in the Confederate Army on May 3 1862 along with his brother, Jesse Mays. He was a private in company K, 40th MS Infantry Regiment. He was Killed in Action at the battle of Luka, MS along with his brother Jesse Mays on the same day, and was reported (by Union Troops who buried all CSA dead after the battle) to be buried in a mass grave with 263 other confederate soldiers killed in the battle in the Shady Grove Cemetery, Luka, MS. He was believed to have been about 30-32 years of age at death. Recently, Lisa Gross-Owens discovered that a grave marker for his brother Jesse Mays was erected next to his wife's (Mary Ann Little) grave in Springdale Cemetery, Atalla County, MS. She indicates that while there is no marker for Abner Mays present, there are two sunken spaces next to these graves that indicate others are buried near them. It is possible that Abner's remains were returned to his home county at some point after the war at the same time as his brothers and buried in this cemetery. Abner died intestate, and his probate was administered in Attala County, MS by his heirs soon after his death.
