George Thomas Hegarty was born at Christchurch, Canterbury in New Zealand's South Island on 8 July 1891 (reg. 1891/10878). He was the son of Daniel and Elizabeth Hegarty (nee Styles) (1858-1922), both of whom were born in Ireland. George joined the Canterbury Infantry Regiment, 1st Battalion during World War I (Service No. WWI 58529). He died of wounds at the No. 3 Canadian Clearing Station in Belgium on 11 January 1918 (bio by Debbie McCauley, 30 January 2022).
