About Pte. Frank Philps
Frank Philps was born at Rongotea in the Manawatū-Whanganui region of New Zealand's North Island on 20 July 1896. He was the son of George Alfred and Mary Ann Philps (nee Parker) who had married in 1890. Mary died in 1906 and George remarried to Agnes Sophia Pocock in 1908. Frank was a cadet with the New Zealand Army Service Corps. During World War I he served with the Auckland Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion. He had declared he was 20 years of age at time of this medical examination, but it is known that he was underage. Frank Embarked on the Ascania from Alexandria in Egypt on 8 April 1916 bound for France. He was killed in action at the Somme on 15 September 1916. 20-year-old Frank was buried in the Caterpillar Valley Cemetery [IX. D. 31.]. Bio by Debbie McCauley (26 September 2024).
