About Pte. David McClelland

David McClelland was born at Lakeside, Ellesmere, in the Selwyn area of Canterbury, New Zealand. His parents were David McClelland and Eliza McClelland (nee Heabourne) from County Armagh in Northern Ireland who had married in New Zealand in 1882. David was a farmer in Southbridge in partnership with his brothers. During World War I he served with the New Zealand Entrenching Battalion. David was killed in action on 8 May 1918. 33-year-old David was buried in Klein-Vierstraat Cemetery, 6km south of Ypres in Belgium. Bio by Debbie McCauley (25 August 2024).

Roll of Honour. Private David McClelland. News reached Southbridge on Monday that Private David McClelland, son of Mr David McClelland, of" Dalkeith," had been killed in action on May 8th in France. Private McClelland went into camp in July last and left New Zealand with the 31st Reinforcement. He had been in the firing line just a month when he met his death. Prior to leaving for the front, Private McClelland was farming in partnership with his brothers at Southbridge, where he had resided most of his life. A younger brother, Private W. McClelland, was severely wounded and gassed last October and is sill at Codford Convalescent Hospital. Deep sympathy is felt for Mr McClellend and the late soldier's brothers and sisters in their bereavement. His death is lamented by a large number of friends, for the late Private McClelland was very popular in the district. Source: Ellesmere Guardian (29 May 1918, p. 2).
