About Pte. Arthur Melville Seabrook
Arthur Melville Seabrook was born in Auckland on 4 December 1886, the son of Henry Hastings Seabrook and Mary Ann Seabrook (née McElwain) who had married in New Zealand in 1882. Arthur attended Mount Eden Primary School, followed by Auckland Grammar School. He left New Zealand in 1911 and worked at Belfast in Northern Ireland. In September 1914 he travelled to London and enlisted in the British Expeditionary Force, serving during World War I with the Grenadier Guards, 3rd Battalion. In October 1915, the battalion were on the Western Front, holding the newly won German fortification known as the Hohenzollern Redoubt at Auchy-les-Mines in France. Arthur is presumed to have been killed in action in this area on 8 October 1915 during the Battle of Loos (25 September to 8 October 1915). He is remembered on the Loos Memorial at Dud Corner Cemetery (bio by Debbie McCauley, 22 January 2024).
