About Pte. Andrew Bernard Canavan
Andrew Bernard Canavan [aka Andrew Burnett Canavan] was born in Christchurch on 24 October 1888. His parents were Thomas Canavan (1852-1892) and Elizabeth Canavan (nee Toughil) (1850-1916) who married in Northern Ireland in 1874. The family emigrated to New Zealand on board the Paiko, arriving in Christchurch on 5 March 1879. Son Thomas Aloysius Canavan was born at sea during the journey. Andrew served during World War I. He was killed in action at Ypres, and is remember on the Buttes New British Cemetery New Zealand Memorial.
