Pierre Jamme Carriere was born about 1662 in St-Sylvestre, Lantheuil, ev. bayeux, Normandy, France (ar. caen, calvados) to Jean Jamme, a farmer, and Marie-Charlotte Hussof Lantheuil, diocese of Bayeux in Normandy. He immigrated from France to New France on May 29, 1687, and arrived in Quebec on the ship Arc-en-Ciel. He immigrated to New France as a soldier in a Marine detachment of troops, he and his company were under the command of Captain M. de Creusel. They had departed from La Rochelle, France, on April 26, 1687. Pierre was 25 years of age when he immigrated.

Once the soldiers arrived in the colony, they were assigned to the garrison of Fort de la Présentation of Lachine. The custom of the time was to house young soldiers among people in the community. In all likelihood, Pierre Jamme was assigned to the home of Pierre Barbary dit Grandmaison who had retired from military service.

Marie Madeleine Barbary dit Grandmaison, was Pierre Barbary's third child and was only 15, when she caught Pierre Jamme's eye. Pierre Jamme asked for her hand in marriage In the fall of 1687, and on October 24, 1688, they had signed a marriage contract which was notarized by the royal notary, Jean-Baptiste Pottier. The contract not only stated their intention to marry but also laid out the terms of the marriage and dowry to be paid. The record states a dowry of 300 "livres" (about $300), was given by Pierre Jamme to his wife and Marie Madeleine's parents gave the couple one heifer, two pigs, a half dozen hens and a rooster.

There were at least 10 witnesses who attended the marriage contract ceremony; Marie Madeleine's parents, neighbours who were members of the Barbarin family, Pierre Buisson, a comrade-in-arms, who belonged to the De Cruzel company from whom Pierre Jamme had obtained permission to marry, and Captain M. de Creusel, Pierre's commanding officer. Pierre signed his name, Pierre Jamme dit La Carrière.

Pierre and Marie Madeleine Barbary Grandmaison married on February 21, 1689 in Lachine (Sts-Anges).[1] . It is unknown if they continued to live with Marie Madeleine's parents or moved into their own home. Most likely Marie Madeleine stayed with her parents, since she was taken with her family during the Lachine Massacre. Pierre Jamme dit Carriere was still a soldier and was often away from home. Less than 6 months after they were married, the Lachine Massacre took place and Marie Madeleine was taken prisoner by the Iroquois, being released around 1700.
