content to clean up
The Name of Compton was Anglified from Cumton
then once more from the Normans Comyn from Comines
the name means in Old English cumb ‘short, straight valley’ + tun ‘enclosure’, ‘settlement’
or for an area in old flanders Comines-Warneton (Dutch: Komen-Waasten) is a Walloon municipality located in the Belgian province of Hainaut
Or It could be Cumb = Cumbria and Ton for settlement simple
Possibly meaning Compton / Cumton / Comyn / Comin / Comine / Comines / Komen
Robert Comine or Comyn came from a short straight valley settlement in Cumbria or he came from Comines County in Flanders of Belguim
There is a short straight valley in Cumbria called Plumpton which could be the very place our family comes from since there is no trace or family lines in flanders
It is said he could have been a Flemish Baron named Robert who came from Flanders the area of Comines and came over with William the Conqueror.
But there has never been any real proof of this the Wynyate clain he is the son or Osbert but the Comyn had a soon named Osbert as well who died in battle of Dumfries along with his father then they say that Osbert was the son of Turchill and he was son of Walthe of Siwardsson which then makes him the son of Siward and him the son of Sir Guy.
but it truly amazing that Walthe son Siward was also the earl of North Umbria and so was Robert Comines/Comyn
Is this Folk lore or is it an attempt to legitimize there family line no one really knows..
I have done DNA testing and so Has my dad and Uncle we all carry Y DNA markers and my great uncle and grand father my family has always said that we are from Scottish back ground but having last name of Compton has always brought questions.
How did we obtain a English name but yet have Scottish blood as they put it. So I started this search and have came to this point. I want facts not fork lore and I just find it very hard to follow the Arden family story it has took me 4 years to find out what I have and I am not saying it all 100% correct but this is what I have managed to find out from many families and people.
thank you and if you have any info that may help fork lore or stories or documents please feel free to contact me..
